Hi
We are heading for Chch end August (house sale permitting) - we're not from the North West though! We are currently in Milton Keynes. It is very nice of you to offer to help. We may need some 'on the ground' info on rental etc a bit nearer the time.
Regards
Moorf

Helen,
There's a young couple ......
You must be getting old! Soon you'll be saying "When I was young....".
:laugh :laugh :laugh
Paul & Lisa, we are heading to Christchurch in August if the house completes on schedule, love to know what you think of Kaiapoi, we are looking at newish properties in Rangiora and Woodend but some of the newer properties in Kaiapoi look nice and seem very good value.
Cheers,
Mark. :P

....we Live in Kaiapoi
psh12001, some q's for you:
How is that pronounced...is it kay-a-poy :?
How far is the beach from the town, what's it like?
Are there regular buses into Chch?
How long's the journey by car and by bus?
Thanks, Fordy :)

you say it kiya- poi as in koi the pond fish, but with a "p", i think it means something to do with water and it being a port in its early days. they advertise it as kaiapoi, the river town.
Buses to city are every 2 hours, by car it takes 25-30 mins any time of the day , and is 16 km, which is about 10 miles to you and me, to get into city centre, but places outside city centre can be a bit quicker. it is not often that it takes you longer unless there is a crash or something. not like manchester at rush hour!!
the beach is 4 kns away from kaiapoi, which is nice. houses at new brighton that are by the sea complain about the easterly wind which is cold and most people dont like that. we are close, but far enough away so we dont get it coming off the sea.....
hope this helps

Thanks, sounds good Paul, Lisa & Co. Prefer the idea of living on the fringe rather than in the 'burbs :yes
Is the beach gravel or sand?...important stuff this ;)
I've heard of smog from the woodburners affecting Chch, is your community small enough for it not to be an issue?
Do you have to go into Chch for a gym/pool?
I've heard that Belfast has some industrial processing that makes it smell bad, is that right?
I had a few more q's but found the map at http://ccc.govt.nz/maps/Wises/map26/MAP26.asp that aswered them but raised more :laugh
Looks nice with the parks and the river. Does traffic noise from SH1 ever become an issue? How busy is the railway? I guess that east of Courtneay stream is flood plain land and north east of the town those blue lines are drainage ditches...loike East Anglier lol
Ha.. just found a Fords Road in Belfast...ever been there?
Cheers for now :nice1 F

Hiay again, Al the beachs are sand in chch area, i dont know of anything else anywhere and i have beeenabout a bit.
Kaiapoi has a aquatic centre with pool , spa and outdoor area. The working mens club which is a large modern place with its own resaurant etc,has a gym we think, its not a grotty old place like in the northeast of manchester... The SHI is not far from where we live , we can see it from our house, but its a joke to say its a motorway..its nothing more than a two lane dual carrageway and goes into one lane just past our house on its way north. we dont really hear it in the house ,but can hear it when the leaves are off the trees in winter and its wet on the road. the rail line is used only for goods trains here and is a single line. the trains are noisy when they come, maybe 5-10 a day max. you woulndt really want to live right next to the line , but again we are far enough away to just hear the rumble. The smog from the wood burners is an issue in NZ and with the canterbury plains , being flat , when the air is still it does have a few nights in winter when its like a foggy night, but i dont really think its a real issue, doesnt bother us anyway. not sure its any worst here than anywhere else in chch, we live on the left hand side of SHI in kaiapoi, off Sneyd st, and its very rural to the west of us, so i think we get off a bit better with it.
hope i have answered all your questions, if not ask me some more

i have just noticed on the map that its out of date and to the right of F4 near charters st, Courtenay drive estate has been build in the last 5 years or so, filling that square with streets, where the old freezing works( slaughter house) was, Oh and yes belfast still has one and it stinks, but it is going in te next5 years so they say. We lived down there before we moved to kaiapoi, and its a disgusting smell. now back to the map, it is also wrong in D5 opposite the golf course, as the latest sub-division of Moorcroft is almost complete, with several streets of houses, some still being built. There are some future plans to extend this estate further east.
There is currenty some infrastructure going in at D6, on that road begining with F, which i think is in prepration of the extension to the moorcroft estate.
hope this clarifies a bit more for you. there is also a 90 seat cinema planned in the centre of town, but it has just had a few planning issues recently to do with parking, so not sure if its a goer yet...
