Are there any occupations in NZ where you can actually earn more than in the UK for doing the same job?

Just one that I know of, Prime Minister.

Helen Clark earns more than Tony Blair or George Bush at current exchange rates.

Of course being pm of new zealand is a much more stressful job than president of the usa, so we shouldn't grudge comrade helen her huge pay packet.

Other than that, not sure if you'd make more in cash terms, but there are plenty of jobs you'll be way better of in terms of lifestyle, with the lower cost of living.

Must admit I didn't expect any to be listed.

Cheers mate!

I was just going to say PM - but FG beat me to it!! Always thought we paid way too much for our PM in a country of low wages, but hey, I guess we could always aspire to the post (or encourage our kids to!!).

both my son in law and daughter are doing the same jobs and getting paid more for them. Trudie used to be a ward clerk, (NHS) and gets paid more for temping office positions here and her other half is a design engineer and he gets paid a bit more than he did in the UK. it can be done

Depends where you are in the UK !! I get paid more in Auckland for doing the same job (nearly) that I had up near Sheffield - but if I had been in London - NO WAY !!

Cost of living vs salary is the real test.

If you consider any minimum wage job in the US, paying at between $5.25 and 7.50 (some 14 states have rejected the federal minimum wage and actually raised it to a max of $7.50, in Alaska I think...) and compare it to the Kiwi Minimum.... ($11.50 is it?) you are way ahead in NZ. Add to the fact that I can't think of many US minimum wage jobs that have heaalth insurance benefits, espaecially not in the first 3-6 months, if at all. At least you get a minimum health coverage as a NZ resident, no matter how low your earnings are. So, for a vast majority of US workers, andy min wage job here would pay more, even after you convert currency. A job at THe Warehouse in NZ would pay almost %100 more than an equitable job at Walmart in the state I came from. Plus the Kiwi has some health insurance. ANd, the night workers dont get locked into, unable to escape in an emergency... yes, Walmart locks their workers in! Inagine a heart attack...no ambulance EMS worker can get in to help you!
Just my humble observations.

Ummm.... I can't, for a minute, and certainly don't want to try to, defend the utterly miserable policies of companies like Wal-Mart and McDonalds, etc... but at the same time, it's entirely incorrect to say the "vast majority" of US workers would be better off in terms of wages, health care, etc. A certain segment at the lower rungs of the economic ladder, yes. But the "vast majority" - not even close.

Yes, "shelf stockers" and "burger flippers" might be better off in NZ... unfortunately, I don't think that those are on the list of desired skills...

The "vast majority" of Americans might be better off in NZ when considering other lifestyle matters (I certainly believe so)...
