Ok, did our first "big" shop today... bear in mind we were disorientated, jet lagged and not particularly hungry :?
Total cost of NZ$191 and that will probably be enuf for up to a week... prob not even THAT long actually - and for 2 of us....
1 clove garlic - 0.78
4 brown onions - 0.78
6 eggs large - 2.09
Bertolli olive oil spread - 2.99
Bunch asparagus - 5.99
1kg Persil powder - 5.99
1kg potatoes (loose) - 2.06
500ml veg oil - 2.35
Frozen pizza - 6.34
Chicken medium - 10.00
Loaf multigrain sliced - 1.72
Scallops breaded (frozen) - 8.93
0.4 kg kumara (sweet potato) - 2.55
Heinz mayonnaise - 2.80
Marmite 125g (small) - 4.87
Streaky bacon (reg pack) - 5.99
2 x lamb leg steaks - 6.15
Tin tuna in spring water - 2.35
Colmans mustard - 2.29
Wynd Estate Chardonnay - 10.95
4 x chorizo sausages - 4.24
120g packed sliced ham - 4.09
1 litre milk (full) - 1.60
I didn't type it all in, got bored!!! But above should give you an idea - none of the above are what I would call budget brands, I can't bring myself to buy them as I probably wouldn't eat them  but it was a shop done at Woolworths so not exactly Harrods foodhall!!
Hope it helps someone out there!!

Was that real Marmite or NZ Marmite. I will never forget my first :eek :eek (and last ) mouthful of NZ Marmite. We did see the real stuff in Super Value last time we were over but it didn't seem very common.
We hit the Cash and Carry recently and bought 3 catering packs ready for NZ but it will run out eventually. :wah

if you buy the same shaped jar with OURMATE as a its name its proper marmite. I think that for us UK people the shopping bill isn't too bad but I think the weekly food bill is possibly cheaper in the US. so they may seem expensive to them.

Hi Moorf and Veronica, Some of the items seem expensive to me, but then we're buying for a family rather than a couple and we're also quite happy to buy non-label products. Most things are cheaper at Pack and Save or Countdown. Some items from our shopping last week:
10 kg Potatoes NZ$3.99
Tray of 30 medium eggs NZ$4.99
1 medium chicken - around 1.6 kg NZ$5.99
2 litres salad/cooking oil NZ$3.99
Butter 1 kg NZ$3.00
Full cream milk 2 litres NZ$2.60
Diet Coca Cola 8 cans NZ$5.29
You'll find that prices for freshly grown New Zealand fruit/veg will fall as we move into summer and autumn.
p.s. Moorf, you'll notice that the choice of pre-prepared foods and meals is very limited compared with the UK. I'll be interested to hear what you make of the frozen pizza you've bought. If it's better than "just about edible" it will be unusual. ;)

Hi All,
Firstly, am just about to have my Ourmate on toast for brekkie so shall compare tastes!! Didn't see anything labelled Marmite but with the advertising or Ourmate and the label it looks promising!!
The frozen pizza is a "Gourmet" one (hmmmm haha) so will see what it's like - didn't like the look of most of the prepacked foods but then we've never really been into them...
We shall check out PaknSave - although haven't seen one here yet - anyone in Chch advise on their locations??
Ok, I'm off to stick my finger in the Ourmate jar...
...... YEP - its the real thing.... YAY!! Perhaps they can't call it Marmite here as it translates into a v. rude Maori word?!!!
Anyway, thanks for the info and replies re the shopping list... will be interesting to see PaknSave prices...

NZ Marmite is in a plastic jar with a red label. The name was already registered in NZ before thr 'real' MARMITE/Ourmate was imported so they decided on OURMATE. NZ Marmite tastes yuk! Vegimite is ok though not as strong a taste as Ourmate and less salty.

I'm a farmers daughter (tho never ate in the barn) - but that description sounds abit like me too. PB would argue the 'no hormones' bit though I'm sure.
Great post about your shopping Moorf :nice1 You can tell so much about a person by their trolly contents :P

I thought I would add to this some prices on baby things for those coming out with young children. I shopped yesterday at Pak 'n' Save and this is what I paid.
Huggies Disposable Nappies 64 Large 38.99
Baby Wipes (Pams) 3.79
Follow on milk (Formula) 13.29 (this is Heinz, Karicare (Popular here) is more expensive)
There are cheaper brands of nappies, however I have found probs with leaking etc and they do not have Pampers here.
Popular with my children are raisins which come in at 2.98 for 400g, however budget ones from Woolworths taste REALLY good but not sure how much they are.
Childrens Yoghurts Pack of six 5.90
Full fat milk for older children 2lt 3.15
I was being careful yesterday and did not buy as much because Eric is away for a few days and we are moving next week. However my bill still came to over $200.
Hope this helps somebody.

Thanks for the PaknSave tip - definitely cheaper!
Weird at the check out though - we asked for bags so we could pack them as she swiped items thru the cash till and were told that she would fill the trolley back up and were then directed to an area where you filled your bags!!

Thanks for the costs - very helpful.
I did a parallel shop between Tesco online and Woolworth online a few months ago and found the NZ shop to be a bit more expensive as a proportion of our expected wages and also a bit more expensive if converted to £ sterling. But it wasn't too bad.
Also, am I right in thinking that it's not easy/possible to get Bounce for your tumble dryer out there? Cos I've invested in 5 packs (200 sheets - enough for 2 years I think) to bring with me ... figured it's keep the linen smelling nice while it's packed, too, if I slot it in the middle! have I done the right thing!!!
And can anyone enlighten me on the horror that is paint costs out there!!!! :wah Is it true that a 4 ltr tin costs over $100NZ ? Cos if so I might bring some paint too! :P
Back to mi boxes now,
Dianne
veronica
14th October 2004, 06:49 AM
have a strong feeling that paint is not a good idea to bring out but sofmeone else here will know for sure. We have been paying $96 for 8lt pot of dulux. It is on special so don't know what it should be, but there will be other specials when this one finishes.
Timbo
14th October 2004, 07:37 AM
Veronica, that price for Dulux is not as bad as it sounds. Works out at $12 per litre. So the equivalent for an 8 ltr tin in uk would be £36.80 or $91.29 at todays rate.
I realise that in Nz it is dear compared to disposable income, but I guess poor old ICI have to make a drink on it.
There are decent quality paints in Nz for a lot less I believe. Wattyls comes to mind. In some respects, New Zealand is way ahead of the Uk. Paintproducts and techniques is one area where I know this is true, as I have researched it for business purposes.

Not sue about the actual " brand " Bounce but, quite frankly, there's nothing you don't seem to be able to get here - why not bite the bullet and get yourself acquainted with a NZ brand of tumble dryer sheet????
The only think I can't find here (and I can't say I've looked too hard!) is Bread Sauce mix. But, I'll just make my own!
Before I came out here I read post upon post about people missing this brand and that brand and I was worried I was going to a country were food was gonna be terrible. BUT, the supermarkets are packed with everything you need - the brands might not be those you are used to - but there are plenty of alternatives and it's great experimenting :nice1
