Hi,

I wonder if anyone can answer a last minute panic question.

In the leaflet we got from NZIS called things to do before you leave for NZ it gives a checklist of essential documents to bring. One of ytems on the list is credit references from your telephone/gas/electricty suppliers.

Has anyone had to take these and are they essential?

We did not bring anything like that at all, and we have managed to get bank accounts, credit card, and electricity in our rental, as well as a telephone connection.

But we had got a letter of employment/contract for hubby detailing his wages etc, and that seemed to be enough.

So long as you have a letter of employment and residence visas you'll be fine - we got $3,000 on one of those buy now pay nothing for 18 months jobs when we only had a PO BOX, a mobile phone!!!!!! and a delivery address. We brought no credit referencing stuff at all (anyway you can get it done on the web these days so don't panic!).

OK with the residence visa, no job yet though. :no

Not looking for credit, just want to be sure we'll be OK getting a long term rental, connection to utilities ect.

We just brought copies of all bills with us. However we arranged electricity supply, telephone and internet over the phone. Nothing was required for house rental and bank account just needed passports, with bank card being issued immediately at the branch.

Not bother with credit cards at the moment, but I have got letters from UK stating what credit limit is ( you know the sort of thing...... as a valued customer we have increased your credit limit to £*********). I also have the last 12 months credit card statements to show that the accounts were conducted correctly.

For £2 you can get a copy of your recent credit details from experion I think its called. You can phone up or do it over the internet. They are the major credit check agency in the Uk. It gives your credit history for 6 years.
Although you probably won't need one - especially for bank accounts/cards etc. A mortgage might be different though, I don't know

Just wanted to add that it is worth all people to do a check on their credit file. When I was still in the UK, I was refused credit which totally baffled me as I am never late with any bills, so I looked into my credit file. Turned out my husbands ex wife's bad credit was on MY file. Took me a while to repair it. :eek

Just been doing the rounds cancelling the utilities - and British gas confirmed that although they dont personnally give credit references the company radders mentioned "Experion" is the one that they use and they gave me the website www.experian.co.uk it looks pretty easy and I will pay for one nearer to when we leave the UK.

I have found some confusing inconsistencies with obtaining credit in my short time in NZ, I arrived on 7th November went out to look for a car after a week, went to the local dealer asked for credit gave all the papers they asked for e.g. Passport, Visa, Proof of Employment/Earnings, NZ bank details....drove out with car.....week two went to a furniture store to buy new beds gave all of the above again....refused until I can produce a pay slip???????? EH!!!

Colin,

Sounds very much like the UK - every time anybody does a credit check on you it lowers your credit rating. Very difficult when you have just moved
to a new country.
