Hi to everyone,

this is my first post on the forum, although I’ve been reading it for a while.


We are in the UK, our ITA has been sent to us and we are waiting for our medical appointments (beginning of July).

I was wondering if there are any electronics engineers in the forum who could tell me about working in NZ.

I carry out FPGA development, analogue and digital design and some power electronics and RF in the UK. I have a degree that meets the iee educational requirements.

I’d like to know how much work there is in the Auckland area, what are the working conditions and salaries like.

Any advice / shared experience is much appreciated

Welcome to the forum Bob.

My husband is an electrical engineer i.e high voltage electrical networks which is different to your career. He is a member of the IEE.

He has a job in smallsville i.e. Dannevirke and his package is £60k plus company use vehicle. He could have earned more in Akl but we didn;t want to live in the cities. Plus the housing is much much cheaper in comparison to the difference in salaries. I am sure that once he gets established with the company he will be working for they will review his salary (I hope).

He will be dropping his salary a lot but not unlike many folk on the forum.

Auckland probably has more employment opportunities for engineers also Wellington and Christchurch.

Oh BTW where abouts in the UK are you from? We in the North West have a meet coming up which is a get together with all like minded expats to be.
They also have had them in Scotland South East and South West.

I saw the meets listed in the forum, but I didn’t read them before, I assumed it was for people meeting up in NZ.

I think that’s a great idea, we’d love to come, but we cant make the 9th (on holiday) how often do you all meet up?

Answer, usually every 4-6 weeks. We meet down off M6 J18,at a place called The Salt Cellar. If you are from the NW/Midlands/Yorkshire area and wish to drop down then you would be made welcome. Next one may not suit yourself but just keep tabs on the forum and you will see when the following one is. More than likely it will be first 2 weeks in August as this will be a send off for myself and family.
