Hi,
I am looking at buying a few new things to take to NZ (fridge/freezer/washing machine/dishwasher etc) as mine are built in and will be staying with the house.

Can anyone tell me if I will have to declare them to customs or do I just say nothing and hope they don't notice that they look new???
Thanks
Nick

I think it is kind of your risk - we bought few new things - microwave and other bits, declared everything we could remember and paid the hundred odd bucks duty on them but when we unpacked came across some other bits i had forgotten all about.

Otherwise, as has been suggested on here before, buy it, take it out of the packaging, switch it on.....it's not new!

Sarah.

we didn't tell them about our Dyson...... :eek
Suppose a washing machine is a bit different.................NAH!!!

The slots in Kitchens tend to be smaller for fridge freezers so if you are buying a UK tall fridge/freezer you may have problems fitting it in. We had ours in the garage of our rental as we obviously couldn't start removing cupboards in that ! I'm not sure its worth buying specially before you come here.

Washing machines are top loaders so if you want front loading they tend to be more expensive. We bought a pretty good front loader here in the sales for $800.

Microwaves are cheap here so I wouldn't bother buying before you leave

Nick,

ask your shipper about this a folder left by Britannia today mentioned VAT free electrical purchases.

It might be cheaper to buy VAT free and pay the duty on it in NZ.

Just a thought.

With a front loader you don't get any choice of washing powder. We've only seen one brand of low suds powder for front-loaders which works fine for us but if any of your family have allergies etc and need special non-biological or sensitive or whatever powders it could be a problem finding them in a low suds version.

Fridges/Freezers

My understanding on this one (I'm not an expert) is that the cooler units on the UK s are not quite as powerful as the NZ s. Hence the UK s tend to have to work harder due to the higher temperatures experienced in NZ, especially in the summer. This can shorten the lifespan.
You also have to think about the extra space. Large units such as fridges/Freezers/washing machines etc can force you into a larger container.

So how small is small for a typical NZ refrigerator? Can anyone provide some rough dimensions or volume? I ask, because we have a relatively small (for the US) fridge - I'm guessing 18 cf. I'd hate for it to be a giant in NZ, and live in the garage.

Here is a good site to check thing out.
Fisher & Paykel are the main dealer in NZ.

http://www.fisherpaykel.co.nz

You can find the sizes/capacity of all whiteware items here.

We don't pretend to be experts in this in that we have only been here a couple of weeks. Our impression though is that prices for most electrical goods are pretty similar to the UK (equal or maybe a bit lower).
Therefore if you are planning to buy something new it would probably make sense to buy it when you get here.

Is there a place like Argos in NZ that sells everything and provides a catalogue to peruse at your leisure?

oh I wish.......

Thought about opening a franchise a few times.....but the kiwis wouldn't pay for the luxury of browsing when they can buy cheap and at the Warehouse.
