Have just had a close look at the boys bikes and realise that they're nothing flash. Abit too much rust for comfort - and abit battered too (they are BMXs and have received abit of a battering).
Am now toying with the idea of leaving them here and buying new out there.
Can anybody either:
A. Give us some idea of the prices of BMX bikes in NZ (how long is a piece of string).
or
B. Post a link to a cycle shop web site. I've tried to do a quick search and I keep coming up with cycle tours and holidays.
Bearing in mind both bikes here in the UK cost in the region of about 120.00 so they're not top of the range and are a fews years old.
Thanks in advance.

How spooky reading this thread :eek - we were talking about the same thing last night - should we buy the boys some new bikes to take with us cos they've never had brand new always second hand ones which are now looking the worse for wear. Will see what advice is given!!

We were thinking about buying them new bikes in NZ too,
but last week oldest had an accident with a car, not his fault and we feel very lucky it's only the bike that got cracked.
That was back down to earth I can tell you that! :eek
His bike was total loss, so he needed a new (2nd hand) bike anyway.
Not what we had in mind but he can't walk 10 miles to school and the bus is pretty expensive ;)
So now it's only youngest who needs another one...
We might buy that in NZ tho, to make him feel right at home with his "New Zillin" bike.
But we're also interested, in bike prices... and all that.

Thanks for that info JubJub ... plenty to go at there !
From a quick glance it looks like bikes can range from the reasonably priced to the extortionate .... much like here in the UK.

They do some ok bikes in The Warehouse, and they safety check them and give you a money back guarantee like with everything. Should be ok and the price will be right too!

Thanks Gran - it's no secret that I love the Warehouse so I guess it'll be one of the first places we look.

Diny,
We have got to the same position re bikes - What did you do in the end?
The boys are getting a bit big for their bikes so do we wait or buy in uk?
We should have room in the container.

Not sure what Diny did - but we decided to ditch the old bikes and buy new here. As it worked out there was spare room in our container so we ended up bringing the best of the boys old ones. But we bought them new ones when we arrived from the warehouse - nothing flash but they were happy with them , cost $150 each.

Depends what kind of bike you are after IMO - I do a lot of mountain biking, and the "good" bikes (ie over GBP600) are cheaper in the UK than over here, but a cheaper one that you just want to use for doing general riding on will be a similar price over here. I just prefer the choice in the UK (I really want an Orange bike and you can't get em over here at all!)
