:bobby Anyone know how points on a UK license (6 to be exact!!!) are translated onto a NZ license? My other half is planning to drive on her UK license for a while and then take the NZ written test (it is still just a written test if taken within 12 months of arriving isn't it?). After watching a 'Police, camera action' type programme based in NZ, l know the point system is a little different there. Also, how long do they stay on your license-she has had her's for about 12 months.
Don't suppose we'd be lucky enough for them to be lost in translation do you???!!!
Cheers

You sure do :P :P Completely clean start when you get over here. A bit of reading......a quick multi-choice theory test.......quite a few dollars....and a few days later a nice clean new license appears in yuor letter box!

Wow!!!
That's really brightened up my day. Now all l've got to do is teach her how to read a speedo as l believe the NZ police are quite handy with the ol' radar gun!!!

Hiya Karen
We were told that to drive in NZ from UK you will need an international licence which will last for 12months. This gives you time to pass the NZ test.

No need for anything else but your UK licence. you can drive on that for up to a year from your first date of entry on your visa and after that its illegal, it was suggested on the forum that it was necessary to take a practical test if you went over the year but that is incorrect, you only need to take the theory/multiple guess one.
But if you are driving over the year on the UK one it is the same as driving without a licence.

Does the term - "S hooting rats in a barrel" give you a clue.
Apart from static camera's, the police have mobile camera's mounted in the back of vans. When we first arrived, they were only allowed to park these in designated 'trouble spots' However, about a year ago they disbanded the designated area's and they can now park them anywhere. They will generally put them around a bend, just after a passing place so that cars who have overtaken have not had a chance to slow before being pinged.
It is just a revenue generation exercise.
If you a caught by a speed camera you get a fine but no points on your licence.
:bobby However, the patrol cars have both hand held radar guns and dashboard mounted radar systems. They can catch you even when you are driving in the opposite direction. These tend to be parked at points where they know they will always catch someone overtaking. If you are caught by the patrol cars then you get a ticket, fine AND points on your licence. $80 + 2 points up to 10k over the limit. $120 + 4 points 10k-20k over. etc. 8 points gets you a 6 month ban.

Also, you really have to watch out for the Stop signs. My OH has had three $150 fines up to now for not coming to a complete stop at a Stop sign and it's always at the same place in the morning.
Will he never learn

Know where you are coming from. Friend of mine who has been out there only 6 weeks, got collared doing 60 in a 40. Slammed with a NZ$120 fine. She couldn't understand how she could have been pulled, as the copper was driving in the opposite direction, done a quick U turn and pulled her.
She has been driving over here for 20 years and not a blemish.
