I'd thought I'd put this under a seperate post as I thought it might help those looking for work, especially in Christchurch.

I really want to highlight the different experiences I've had looking for work in NZ. I first came over on a solo job hunting trip back in February / March, just after we were granted PR. At that stage we hadn't sold the house and didn't have a definate date for when we would be here permanently.

I'm in telecoms / IT and although laterly a project manager was happy to try anything in that area from the most basic technician role upwards. On the trip back in February the response was pretty lacklustre with most agencies (although not all) more or less telling me I was wasting my time and I should be trying Wellington or Auckland. This was backed up by an agency in Wellington who told me they could me a job inside a week if I went there.

Despite all this we resolved to give Chch a go when we were in the position to move out permanently, with the fallback plan of moving elsewhere should I not be able to get a job.

I'd continued to apply for roles from the UK after I returned with the usual, "thanks but no thanks" email responses.

When we did arrive at the start of last week things were certainly different. Admittedly there wasn't a stampede for my services, but at least there was some interest and agencies were saying positive things about finding me work. I think the real difference was being able to say "available for immediate start". I've managed to pick up a job offer and turn down another couple of interviews all inside the first week and a half.

Hope this helps encourage those who are struggling to get any response while applying to jobs from the UK.

Could'nt agree more :yes There really is no substitute to actual being on the ground, avaliable to work. Its very hard trying to get companies interested whilst you are in the UK (for me anyway!) I never had a free day for the 1st week when I was in Wellington!

So, Have you accepted the job offer?

Hi Andy,

Thanks for that post, I'm sure it makes a lot of us who are headed out that way a lot more confident, certainly has me! :nice1

Mark. :P

Yes, I was in Christchurch on a fact finding mission at the start of June 05 and I had the same experience (I am in IT, software developer). If you have a definite date for your move, employers and recruiters get more interested.... I was even told by a recruiter to put forward a white lie like 'I will be there in Sep05' even though this will possibly be delayed for loads of reason (visa not yet granted, house not yet sold, ...). I really believe that if you show enthousiasm and if you are proactive, things will happen. Personally, I think we are going to move to NZ even without job offer.... This shows our commitment and this would allow us to escape another Irish winter ;)
We are lodging our ITA by the end of next week and a move in Sep05 is still a real contender.

You were lucky to get even these, in my experience. I was totally ignored by many agencies before I got here.

Even when I could quote a flight number and arrival time within the next fortnight I didn't find the agencies that interested, so don't get disheartened if you feel unwanted. The interest will rise once you're here on the ground ready to work and not seen as a potential 'tyre kicker' any longer.

Yes I have, which way why I cancelled the other interviews.

I'm going in to sign the contract on Monday and I start on the 4th. :smile
