Just a snippet of info gleaned today from the Council that might help other pet owners - from July 2006 microchipping of pets will be compulsory. BUT - Council are asking that owners do not get their pets chipped yet as they still don't know which "type" they will be using!

One thing they don't say is "what happens if my pet has a chip in from another country"!

Hmmm

:?

I think there has been some sort of discussion on this before (but I'm not awake enough yet to look it up  )
If you bring your dogs / cats from the UK they have to be microchipped - but there's no mention of which type of microchip is preferred :uhoh . Just have to hope that ours are ok, I suppose - all of mine have been done here ready for their big adventure! ;)

I think the problem has arisen because the UK microchips sometimes explode when exposed to NZ temperatures!

Also - they want the UK animals to be chipped so they can following their breeding pattern - to see if they integrate with the NZ pet population or if they only breed with UK pets. This is constantly being monitored by satellites.

:eek :exit

Also - some people might believe the crap above!

The word, I believe, is "misinformation".

Maybe they are chipped so "big bro" can keeps tabbs on us rather than our pets.

I always wanted to fit a camera to my cat. "robbiecam" (cat was called robbie). So we could see what antics he got up to.

Now i would like to chip my daughter - it is a bad bad world and i think all kids should be chipped (up to age 16 then it can be removed).

Sorry to side track.

I've read, perhaps in a thread herein, that microchips in the US and NZ use different frequencies. I suppose this means we'll have to get our cats re-chipped at some point. Hopefully they can get into NZ with the ones they have now. I'll need to check up on this; will report later.

Selchie -
I've read on this site that it can be an issue to get a US chip which is 125 khz as opposed to the 134.2 khz in NZ. But when we visited the quarantine facility in Levin, the owner assured us that their scanners and the MAF scanners read both types, and that I wouldn't have any trouble with the standard US chip. They said they've handled dogs and cats with the US chip without any trouble. With that assurance ,and since my vet didn't seem to have an idea how they would get a 134.s khz chip, we went ahead with the standard US chip they had. Hopefully that will work, since EB weighs 1.4 kilograms (3 lbs); there's only so much room for chips!!

I'll post later if we run into trouble though...

In the US, if you need to get your pet chipped or re-chipped, we just had this done and verified with the company that the chip was acceptable to NZ. Use the HomeAgain chip (I think its called "LifeChip" in NZ). The website is http://www.homeagainid.com/. We confirmed its readability and our vet confirmed directly with them as well.

The kitty cam does sound interesting, until I think about the litter box scenes and close-ups of one doing "kitty yoga" (think foot-in-the-air bathing). And then there are the 16 hours per day of napping. You might want to equip that camera with infrared, too.

yeah - but havent you wondered how they get soooo dirty!

i guess a brain probe would be more interesting to see what they are thinking!

eeewwww - can you imagine the view from the cam when a cat cleans itself in certain areas :laugh

We had our cat microchipped in the UK - she had a new kind of chip done. The only difference to the old chip is that their body temp can be constantly checked or something like that. MAF cleared her instantly so it seemed to be fine. Hope this helps
