Can anyone shed some light on the meaning of "Domain" and "Reserve" in the NZ sense.
Whenever I see signs for these they both appear to be pointing at large open spaces :?

My understanding of reserve is any open space that is protected from being built on. There are hundreds of them all over Auckland, some are play parks, others are just fields, some are only the size of a couple of housing plots

One of my kids favourite places in NZ is the Ashhurst Domain. It's a public play area/picnic area/park/wooded walk etc.

Plus, dogs are strictly forbidden from all Reserves.

Really? Ooops.
Take ours round the corner all the time, there are no signs or anything?

Apologies - it's not as hard and fast as I'd thought - just rang the Council here to get info - "Council" Reserves are generally okay for dogs depending on signage (was told if no signs to check with council or could be a $300 fine). Other reserves are generally the preserve of the D.o.C etc and are defintely dog-free as are National Parks.
Sorry, my last answer was too black and white.
Wherever you are in NZ your local Council website will comprehensively list all areas that are dog friendly or restricted, for instance, Auckland has good info here:
