Hi everyone

Well, it's been a week yesterday since we landed in Auckland and everything is groovy :clap On Wednesday night I was looking through the Herald and saw a job I thought I might like. I applied on Thursday morning, had an interview yesterday and the contract was in my email by the time I got home :nice1 So much for the Kiwis not moving quickly eh? I haven't even got my work permit yet  This week so far I've had a temporary cap put on a front tooth, had my medical done, got the job and am off to Immigration tomorrow morning with all my paperwork. :yes

Auckland is lovely. No matter where you go it's green. Even if the houses are on top of each other, once you're in one it doesn't seem so bad. We're staying with my sister in law and her family and they have a house on a 600sqm section in Browns Bay. We always thought that would be small but it's perfectly adequate. They've got a huge deck with a spa and it doesn't seem that small. Driving over the Harbour bridge is an experience in itself - the water both sides with all the boats bobbing up and down - it's like being part of a postcard :laugh

Coming from Euro land I don't find the prices expensive. They're the same in dollar as they are in Euro but my salary will be more dollars than Euro so I should actually be better off. We've been to The Warehouse and Pak N'Save. :nice1 :nice1 :nice1 I LOVE the Warehouse and can't wait for us to have our own place so I can be let loose in there. We went to DressSmart in Onehunga today. It was OK. You'd want a lot of time I think to hunt out the bargains but it seemed fine for kids clothes. We had to go into Pumpkin Patch and the stuff was lovely in there. And not too expensive either.

The one thing I've found remarkable since being here is how all the research I did, over the last year particularly, sort of went out the window. I come across stuff all the time that I know from the forums (the houses ARE cold at night - it was really warm here the first couple of nights but then there was a frost on Sunday night and I woke up during the night and I swear I thought my nose was frostbitten :uhoh ). It's like doing the theory part of a driving test. You can know all the answers but until you're actually behind the wheel you don't know how to drive. I felt and still feel as if I'm somewhere I know but it's all different. It's so similar to home and London but it's different too.

I've tried the pies - meat and cheese, buttered chicken etc.etc. and they are gorgeous. I'll have to stop or I'll be back to DressSmart 'cos my clothes won't fit. Everytime I see something different to eat I try it. I've had Kumara - I'll have it again. We went for a Chinese last night. Be careful - the portions are HUGE. We paid $41 for, what we thought, would feed 5 adults but there were another 3 full meals in it. It tasted different to what we were used to. Different, but nice. We're going to try an Indian next week.

Well, I think that's probably enough for now. For all of you who're only in the planning stage - good luck. Diny - you're nearly ready for the off now aren't you? Best of everything my dear.

Good to hear from you. I was wondering how you're getting on.

So pleased that I've come across another Warehouse fan. Row after row of cheap junk that screams out 'buy me' (well - to me anyway).

Yep ..... 2 weeks on Saturday is our departure date ...... still abit of uncertainty but keeping fingers crossed.

See you soon and keep us posted.

Hi

The position is for a Personal Assistant but it's much wider than that. I'll be doing website maintenance, HR and marketing as well as all the usual stuff. It's what I was doing in Dublin and both they and I are delighted to have found a match.

It's an electrical engineering company so there will be lots of coming and going. They hire a lot of overseas electricians if anyone's interested???? :smile Seriously, you know how to get me so if you need any info just give me a shout.

No problem Marie.

I know that it's early days and everything is going to feel strange and/or wonderful but I've just had the best Saturday in years :clap We went to watch Mike's niece play netball this morning, then had a look at one of Turners' car auctions, went to a wonderful open home (600 - 800k and one my SIL wanted to see, way too rich for our blood) and ended up having lunch at a cafe overlooking the beach in Browns Bay. No matter where we end up living, the beach is never going away and walking along beside it today Mike said "this is our life from now on" :nice1

Mike sells cars and, as I said above, we went to Turners today and then we visited a couple of car yards. The prices are the same, or very close, in Dollars as they were back home in Euro. Another price comparison - we used to pay Euro 22.89 for 750cl Smirnoff - we got two 1 Litre bottles for $50 yesterday!!!! :clap

Welcome to Auckland and what a beautiful day and there are many more like this. This is the middle of winter and we have just walked out of our door along the edge of the bay with the sun setting. Just glorious.

I'm sure you will be very happy here

No matter where we end up living, the beach is never going away

A car company (?Toyota?) ran an ad recently under the slogan "We (i.e. NZers) don't know how lucky we are" in which it claimed that a very very high percentage (?95%? - can someone confirm) of NZers live within 40km of the beach. For many NZers the beach is such a natural thing to be near to.

Does the novelty of living by the beach ever wear off?

When we lived in Darwin in Oz, we were about a 5 min walk from a beautiful tropical beach ... palm trees, golden sand .... the whole 9 yards. After the first few weeks we hardley ever ventured that way. We drove past it every day but as for actually making a visit to it and walking along it ...... well, after a while it just didn't happen.

I guess you can say the novelty wore off .... or we just took it for granted. Either way we never went there.

Mind you, we were alot younger with no kids, there were bars and nightclubs which took our fancy, maybe things would be different now.

Hi everyone,

I'm a newbie to the site and am loving it so thought I'd introduce myself. My husband just joined, Howie, we live in New Jersey but I'm a kiwi of sorts. My family emigrated to Auckland from England when I was 7 and my grandparents followed!. I have lived there most of my life until I met my husband and moved here 7 years ago whilst visiting England. We visit home once a year and my daughter who is 2 has been home 3 times! It's in our pre-nup that I go home and see my family, friends and get my fix of what I call my home (just kidding!).
If you guys have any questions I'd be glad to answer them if I can. My sister just lives up the road from the Plaza up at Whangaparaoa and my grandparents live in Orewa, my Mum in Glenfield but she works at Barfoot and Thompson, a Real Estate Company at the Plaza!

We're gonna make the move hopefully 2006:-)
