Coromandel Peninsula is very beautiful with rolling green hills and lovely coastline. Was only there a few days but did enjoy it; was more on the rural side I thought (which was attractive to me- I am definitely the Southern Man type)

hello, another advantage of the coromandel is that its not to far from Auckland.

New Zealands No1 marijuana growing region as well.
Loads of old hippies still hanging around in Coromandel township, making a killing from tourism.
Great place to kick back and blow a few scoobies if your that way inclined :booby

Hi Moorf. We spent a couple of weeks up on the Coro in March. It is without doubt a lovely place, with some of the best beaches in NZ. It is however VERY rural. The roads are fun though, very twisty and hilly. I think you may find Tairua a bit hard going on a day to day basis as we were told there are only about 1500 permanent residents. We are in fact looking to settle very near by. PM me if you want any more on the area as I have contacts on the ground up there.

Timbo - after living in a village of just 12 houses for 6 yrs in Perthshire Scotland, we are quite prepared, indeed excited, about finding another small rural community - as long as there is scope to make a trip to a larger place once in a while we are fine - of course, I doubt Coro is going to be a viable choice if Woz has to get an IT job... !!! But, the business we found was in the IT industry (kind of!) so it might scrape through!!
I'll PM you!
Cheers
Moorf
PS Hmmm twisty and hilly roads - I won't see Woz for dust - literally!! He'll be searching for Mini Coopers in Coro now! :laugh

now on a different subject, Timbo, is there an internet cafe in Coro?
If not, there'd be a killing to be made in the summer months. :hopeso

Sorry Moorf, ha ha.........race you to it!
That sounds like an absolute cracker of an idea :nice1
I was up there 18 months ago and I'm sure there wasn't one then.
Tell you what, if I do it first, you can set up in Thames which is just down the road a wee bit. It is also a lovely wee town. Bit prone to tidal flooding in some areas tho, so you'll have to be high.......................

Hi Timbo, I've never been to Thames. Any reasons to give it a miss?

Hi Douglas. We only visited for the day, but Thames gave the feeling of one of those places that people simply pass through. Nothing specific really (unless you count the fact that there is a Macs and KFC ) that I could put my finger on.
Property in and around Thames seems a bit cheaper than other parts of the Coro, but then it being on the west coast means it has not got the glorious beaches that the majority of people strive for. It has all the usual stores and cafe`s etc, but just felt lifeless. Maybe we hit it at the wrong time of year.
There were signs of possible gang culture as well. Grafitti etc. This put us off too.

By the way Moorf, yes there is another net cafe in Whitianga, 20 mins or so up the Coro from Tairua. The sheer numbers of summer visitors to this area would, I think support the type of business you are considering. This would probably give you more leisure time in the quiet months, so you could go diving. :P

My husbands' olds use to live in Thames so I've spent quite a good while up there. It's an OK kind of town but I agree with the statement that it seems to be a place where folks pass through - which is a good thing if you're looking into anything along the touristy theme. As for the comment about never falling below 11 degrees - I presume that was regarding further up the peninsular - NOT Thames ????
It has a couple of 'memorable' points ... a nice art museum/shop just by the yacht club, a damn good fish shop down by the dock - fresh off the boats, dirt cheap, plentyful and tasty. A gold mining museum and the most hilarious cinema I've ever visited (very old, plaster falling off the walls and the doorman, sweet shop assistant, cashier, usher & projectionist is the same person - like something out of Phoenix Nights). On the northern edge of the town there is an old, overgrown cemetry just up the hill to your right off the main highway. Well worth a walk around there - lots of stories about early settlers etc can be found on the head stones. And - last but not least ........... a couple of miles out of town heading north there is a mocking bird 'colony' in the right hand side of the road. If your window is down you'll know well in advance when you're approaching it - the smell and the noise !!!! Mind you, it's 7 years since we were there - do mocking birds nest in the same place each year ....... what a blooming question eh. Also - I'm taking my father in laws word that they were mocking birds.
Thames is worth a visit but don't let it get you down if you never manage to get there.
Diny.

Good on ya Timbo, great shot.
When I was up there last, we had a top dressing plane buzzing around us. The scenery was just like your pic.
The kids were waving and he was waggling his wings back at us.
Reeeeeeeally nice up in the Coromandel, without a doubt.

Thanks. When we were up there in March, we saw just one single plane in three weeks, and that was a little single engine job (crop duster ?).
As far as I recall, we saw one roundabout and no traffic lights apart from in Thames.
Driving down from Whitianga on a beautiful sunny Sunday, we drove for probably near an hour without seeing another car moving.
Pure bliss.

Tairua is definitely a holiday place... don't expect too much life outside the holidays! However, it is a good spot for any sort of passing trade type business, as it is a natural stopping point for traffic heading to whitianga.
I tihnk there may be a couple of internet cafes in Whitianga now.
Tairua is only about 45mins from Thames, which means a fair number of folks now commute to Thames for work every day. Thames, being the areas main town, is certainly where most of the jobs would be.
Tairua basically has one main street, that's it. If you aint on there, you ain't nowhere. However, Tairua, like whitianga, is really developing again now. It is directly across the estuary from Pauanui, which is another major holiday spot, a lot more pricey than tairua (read"yuppieville"), but a good source of income for the Tairua region, none the less.
cheers now,
Stu.
