Afraid I dont know, but I would like to know myself as my roots are coming through!

I found costs cheaper than UK, but then it really depends on what type of salon/barber you went to in UK and what prices you were paying. I'm afraid I was a Toni & Guy addict so was used to paying well over £100 for a cut and colour. Ohhh how times have changed :?

I also have to admit to tipping my hairdresser. I guess it's habit from UK - but I wouldn't tip as a matter of course, only if happy with cut! I tipped mainly because a couple of hairdressing friends used to tell me how badly paid they were and that tips came in very handy to top up their meagre wages.

They don't "expect" a tip and my hairdresser here was quite taken back - I only handed her $10 but she didn't quite know what to say/do! She's also a friend so we argued about said tip for a few secs before she took it!

I'd wait and see what you think of your experience, and then decide. Just remember to take some notes with you - it's so easy with EFTPOS to have no cash on you to tip!

Oops, should have mentioned costs - I have short hair and have colour (half crown hi-lites) and cut and this costs me c. $100 - not a flash place either, just a hairdresser in Sumner.

cheers Moorf, my hairdos were generally £60, in a nice city centre salon. Will let you guys know how much it costs in Auckland.

Maybe need to start doing my own colour again......... that should help the budget.

SIXTY POUNDS?? A HUNDRED POUNDS???? Jeeze.

Now I know why my wife always paid cash at the hairdressers. ;)

An hundred quid would cover my barber's costs for at least a couple of years (split 50/50 between actual cutting costs and search fees, of course).

Ah, George, now you know, and some hairdressers are more expensive than that, I have heard tales of £200 in some cases...... The things us women have to do to look nice (or you lot complain :laugh)

But from other side of coin, I think hubby paid $10 for a cut the other day.

I'm with you on that one George. !!!!! :eek :eek :eek

I cut my own. I colour my own. When I had short hair I would have it trimmed every few weeks at the village hairdressers which would cost me 3.50.

I'm so cheap to run I think I'll find budgeting in NZ a piece of cake.
:yes :yes :yes

You don't tip for just about anything in NZ unless you're really impressed with the service. I came here to the UK and trotted off to the high street hairdresser recommended by a friend, got my haircut and wandered off without tipping. About two years later a friend says to me 'how much do you tip when you get your hair cut' ' :eek :eek ' says I. Oops!! I really had no idea. I still refuse to tip unless I'm really pleased with the service.

I never ever tip and refuse to start!

I know - I'm a cheap skate - but I dont care.

I pay around $25 for a cut here and I colour my own hair with a kit for $12 from the supermarket.
On the odd occasion when I treat myself to a salon colour I pay around $100.

These are prices in the suburbs...I reckon you would pay double that in Wellington City!

I'm currently paying $45 in a good salon in Roto-vegas. And I never tip - it's not expected here in NZ and I'm happy to stick with the locals on this! Also, I am looking on the lack of money for colour / highlights as an opportunity to rediscover my natural hair colour for the first time in many many years!!

Hi

have been and had hair done it cost $104.90 about £40 so I didn't think this was too bad although I wasn't hugely impressed especially when they try and sell you their products :no but I stood firm and didn't give in even when she went and got them off the shelf and put them in front of me.!!!
Might go back might try somewhere else.

Bye Lisa :P

Lisa, alot of the hairdressers I've been to in London try to sell their 'product' too. It's not particularly a Kiwi thing. Do they get a commision for selling it?

Lisa

Please can we see a photo of the end result, so that we can decide if the salon is any good?

Although not hugely impressed I wouldn't want to put a local salon out of business by displaying myself publically!! :laugh

I will have to leave you wondering.

I don't know about you ladies but I just bought a complete hair kit from Mitre 10 for $18.95 and its going to last us for a while. I mean for my son and me.

A men's barber wanted $15 for a hair cut and those who have seen me know how much hair he had to work with! That was a total rip off!

I paid $65 for a restyle in a top salon in Wellington CIty by a Senior Stylist and I was hugely impressed. I looked fantastic - for one night only!
My head was massaged when he (senior stylist) washed my hair. It felt amazing; I was glad he was a he!!!!
I was really impressed with this until Carol told me all the hairdressers do that here.
Now I have remembered his styling recommendations - blow dry your hair with your head upside down - I am looking vaguely amazing some days. But - cannot wait for my next appt on July 30th - my date with Neil & Tim Finn at the St James Hmmmmmmmmmm :smile

Profiles in Sumner has a massage chair that you sit in when you get your hair washed ... bliss.

I thought head massages where the norm - always had one in the UK.

Methinks you need to find another hairdresser - take a trip to Sumner - for some reason we are over-run with salons! :? There's now NO petrol station, a zillion cafe's and three salons!

Right folks, brace yourselves, I went to a salon down at Botany town centre, its a small chain around Auckland by the looks of it. I had a nice bloke colour my hair, decided not to have it cut as I am trying to grow out my fringe, but I needed it done, my grey roots were over an inch long!

Anyway, it cost $117 :eek :wah but its about the equivalent of what I was paying back in Glasgow.

Now I was impressed with the salon and with the guy, I reckon he would do a good cut too, but not sure I can afford to keep that up every 6-8 weeks. But my hair looks lovely, nicely styled (and poker straight), ready for my night out, and I got a head massage.

I either need to send Junior out to work when "it" gets here, or get them trained up as a hairdresser, pronto!

Well yesterday I went to a local hairdressers. Not a swanky salon, but a rather un kept.... shop. I have quite long straight hair which is based with a warm brown and then foiled highlights around the top of my head.

I used to have my hair done by a girl in the Uk who had worked for the same hairdressers for years. £ 29 - £35 every 6 weeks I used to pay. No-one who knew me could believe how little I used to pay as my hair always looked great.

So I go with the colour instructions in hand and hope for the best. She seemed to do it in a very 80's stlye of colouring it :? Weird way to do it but..........

I said no to drying it as i had been in for longer than I had wanted to leave the kids with a neighbour for.

$71 please!! :eek :eek :eek :eek FANTASTIC

But she collared me on the way out. `Sorry it was $120`

Came home and dried it. Went out and got lots of compliments so. Happy me :nice1

Jan sounds like you've found a good haidresser there!

I pay $32 for a wash (including head massage) cut & blowdry in Whitby although I do go to a friend's daughter's place & its full of grannies! (OK anyone who's met me knows my hair doesn't look like a granny's!!) When I had it coloured it was around $100 including wash, cut & blow-dry & 2 salon size products.

At home I used to pay £100 for the same (in Surrey) so I'd say I'm getting a pretty good deal.

My friend in Auckland thought she was told it would be $117 for a cut & 2 colours - when she went to pay the bill it was $170!!!!!! Eeek! Needless to say she's looking for a new hairdresser!
