My wife and I have recently discovered that our 5-year old twin boys will probably need hearing aids. While the impact of this was still sinking in I got to thinking on how this may affect our application for PR. Is there a simple way of finding out whether this will scupper our application. Does anyone have anyone have a similar experience?

Hi,
This is just my opinion.
NZIS are only interested in medical conditions that are contagious, and so may harm others, or that may result in you costing NZ money.
ie a condition that stops you working and needs a lot of health care.
I would be astounded if hearing problems were a problem.
Cheers

Hi PhilDanger,
I must say I have some experience in finding out what the exact healthrequirements are, because I have a son with a disability.
I have been trying for almost a year now to find out if we would even have a chance of getting PR. I even contacted the NZIS about it, this was their answer:
Applicants will not be granted a medical waiver if:
~they require dialysis treatment, or a consultant physician has indicated that they will require such treatment in the immediate future; or
~they have active tuberculosis; or
~they have a mental disorder or intellectual disability that has needed care in a hospital or supervised residence for more than 90 days in the last 2 years; or
~they have a physical incapacity that requires full-time care.
Those are the rough guidelines according to which the health requirement is decided. An immigration officer and a consultant physician would need to closely examine the situation and the severity of your son's condition before a decision can be reached regarding his eligibility for residency.

I guess you won't have to worry, I don't think that the need of hearing aids for your children would affect your application.
Good luck :hopeso

Thanks for your reply - I think that the issue may be to do with the support that my children may need from the state. Looking at it from the NZ authorities perspective it looks like this will cost the state money to supply any special needs that are required. I hope that I am wrong but this may be an issue and prevent any future application for PR. I would like to get clarification before I invest too many resources into seeking PR. I was due to fly out to NZ in the next few weeks to look at the job scene but this is now on hold until this is resolved.

Thanks for your reply - it looks like its best to contact NZIS just to make sure.
