Just thought Id pose the open question of...

What do you wish you had brought with you when you emigrated to New Zealand?

Or conversely what did you take that in hindsight you wish you had left behind? (No - Partners and children dont count!)

Waiting with bated breath!

I sneekly managed to bring a cupboard full of food!!! :eek
It had tins of soup, spaghetti, nescafe, mayonaise :eek , curry pastes, vinegar, sauces, marmalade, hot chocolate, horlicks and other stuff.

I know it was naughty.... but, boy it tastes better. So if you can get away with it!!

I also wish I had taken advantage of the UK supermarkets very regular buy 1 get 1 free offers on shampoo and every other toiletry item we use. $7.95 for Alberto balsam fruit sensations feels quite scary!!

We pretty much bought eveything we own, (apart from my dyson which I wish we had and I can't remember why we ebayed it :no )

but I would recoomend stocking up on your favourite beauty products - not only shampoo and conditioner but moistureizer cleanerse etc etc.

They do stock them over here so don't worry, but they are expensive. There is usally one of the main brands (panten / fructus / herbal organics esseance etc) on offer but the higher end stuff like John Frida frizzee is sooooooo expensive. Also the if use high end cleaning things like clinec or Liz Arden etc then I'd start to stock up now.

Oh and books. they are stupied expensive here. Stock up on anything and everthing you have ever wanted to read in the UK (or US or whever) so you have them to read here. For example something on the paperback best seller is around $25 mark. and there are no offers of buy one get one half price or 3 for a $15. Its full price or nothing .... so I go to the library and put a hold on and wait ! :smile

OMG - you are right - they are so expensive - I had never been into the library in the UK before but now kids and I are enrolled and we get books out all the time.

In case of some of that light relief I need now and again, I buy my favourite authors books from ebay in the UK as we are getting our post redirected. Only costs a couple of pounds for a book - it may be used but whats the difference! Words are still there :yes

Whitcoulls do a "book card" - buy xx amount of books and get one one free - every little helps!

Like Tanya, I now spend lots of time at the libraries (they're FAB here) - they even stock current bestsellers (you pay about $3 for 2weeks for these but still worth it compared to the excessive prices of books here)!

Having said all that - $25 is still only £9.99 ish at current exchange rate.

Hi all,
I know on a NZ salary $25 is a lot but it's about comparable with the UK price still. I have just gone and brought a load of childrens books for the endless run of forth comming birthday parties and even with 3-4-2 offer at watersons the books divided out to £8 each and thats for a kids book.
It's not just NZ, life is expenceive these days :wah (or I'm just gettting older and noticing it more :wah :wah :wah )

True .... but at WH smiths they would regularly do 3 for GB10 (don't have a pound sign on my keyboard) so I'd stock up on the offer and get alteast 3 (or sometimes 6) at a time. now I can only get 1 for that price.

Oh well atleast family and friends in the UK will know what to get me for b'days xmas now :smile

But then I don't read as much now as I no longer have over an hour comute on the train (each way) every day :clap :clap

Asda & Sainsburys always have books cheap - and kids book for about £1.50 plus.

Miffy - Will send you a £ sign by royal mail - should take 20 weeks to get there though!
