We cannot find a related post. We need an opinion or information how hard is it to find a job while pregnant. My wife is expecting now (8 weeks pregnant) and not until the house sells, we cannot go to NZ. As soon as it sells, we are on our way to Wellington. She is worry now :no that she can not find a job since there will be no companies want to hire a pregnant woman (by this time it will be obvious that she's pregnant). We wonder if anybody can give us his or her thought.

We got our PR and we assume we can take the health benefit. Do we still need to have health insurance?

Thanks in advance

Firstly pregnancy is covered by government health plan - so you're OK there but I do recommend both getting health insurance anyway.

I would think as in most places its probably not so easy to get a permanent job when pregnant, but I'm sure a temporary job wouldn't be a problem.

Good luck! and congratulations!!

Hi guys, congratulations first!

IMHO I think it very much depends on what your wife does. If she is in a profession that is in demand, she might be able to get started pre pregnancy. It's really hard to give any advice, becuase technically potential employers should not take her pregnancy into consideration - but of course they probably will, being human. In your wife's shoes I would probably look for something temporary until baby was born, then see how she feels at a later stage.

The other thing to note is that in NZ you need to work for an employer for at least a year to qualify for maternity benefits (unless someone can tell me otherwise), rather than the 6 months it is in the UK (if that's where you are coming from).

Not much help, but best wishes.

Hello
First of all thank you...

Hmmm I expected that it wouldn't be easy to for a job while pregnant, but I guess we have to go to the temp. route first.
Ruthryoo thanks for replying, her field is actually IT. She's a software engineer right now in the state.
Sarah, thank's for the feedback...

Software I would have thought may have been quite easy to get temp jobs, as far as the medical care goes, yes it is mostly free, if you have residency status. Parental leave entitlment can be found:-

Have started a pregnancy thread in the Health section, although may not be that relevant for you if you are going to Welly.

Dont get stressed, just get the house sold and get over here, you can sort the rest out later!

JubJub,
thx for the feedback. I agree with you that we have to take one in a time right now. Sell the house first. :D then go through the rest later on.

As for looking for a job, I also believe that it will be quite easier for her to find a job since she's in the IT field. But again, I dunno...finger cross!! :laugh
