Hello all,
This is my first post (not just on this forum, but on any, ever  ). we are at "waiting for ITA" stage (in case you've read him, I am Cardiff Irons' wife), and our minds are working overtime on what we will have to produce. Biggest query is how do you prove you ran a business for 12 years? Would you have to prove it? We finally threw all the accounts a few years back, as UK law only required keeping them for 7 years, and we were way past that.
I have noticed that everyone is really well informed and helpful on this site, and want to thank you for inspiring me to join in.

Hi,
We had to d it in 2 cases! And, pne of the companies had been owned in 1984...THose records were 21 years gone!the other was about 10 years in the ast.... and much of it long since thrown out after we sold the businesses. Here is some of what we did:
Tried to locate our old accountants (retired)
Old Landlord
Newspaper articles from library
Old advertizers
contact old clients
Went to county business licence record department
Had old packaging material with our company name on it.
Found former employees.
Industry membership records from associations.
Records from charities that accepted our company donations.
Civic organization records which listed our jobs, like local rotary club.
Any old building permits in the county record department?
Had record of USA IRA and Keogh documents...or eqauivelent bank retirement programs?
It took me a lot of time to find usable tid-bits through these efforts. Some paid off, some didn't
Good Luck.
J

Thanks Junnifer, some thoughts we hadn't had there. I guess it's time to trawl!
