I've been reading the comments about Cadbury's chocolate in New Zealand over the last week or two - and I sympathise deeply, brought up on Cadbury's and Galaxy from Blighty.

Would you believe that the few New Zealander's I've mentioned this to (it's not a natural topic of conversation) think their own version of Cadbury's is wonderful and that overseas Cadbury's is sickly sweet? :eek

There are certainly more varieties of Cadbury's here than I've seen elsewhere.

would you like to add the cadbury's that are made for the UK in Malaysia, and sold here in Manila? I think it's cooked to your own taste, and we all have different taste buds.

the first thing i think i'll do when i land in nz is to buy a bar of cadbury's and taste it along with the bar i bring with me from manila. and then i'll know!

:cheers

Chocolate isn't a natural topic of conversation? What the heck kind of people are these Kiwis, anyway? Oh dear, maybe I'd better cross NZ off the list. I wonder if Belgium would grant us permanent residency. :laugh

I second that!!!

Call themselves a civilised nation and chocolate isn't a natural topic of conversation.

Cancel the house sale .... we're staying !!!!

You're right - lots of different varieties of Cadbury's in NZ - all tasting c**p.

The problem is that we Brits like what we think is chocolate, but in fact as usual we are duped and conned into buying a cheaper version that hardly contains any Chocolate ingredients at all. If the European community could have its way we would be queuing at the shops to purchase "a large Galaxy bar of Hydrogenated fat, Whey Powder, Vegetable fats and emulsifiers please". :laugh
Cocoa or Cocoa butter is rather bitter, we then add milk and cream and sugar to sweeten the taste. On the continent in Switzerland or Belgium this is done to perfection, here in England we add all kinds of s*** to make sure our kids get really hooked.
The Chocolate in NZ is probably closer to the original thing than here.
Can somebody rhyme off the ingredients in a normal NZ Milk Chocolate Galaxy bar and I’ll pop out to the shops and do a comparison?
God this is really sad.

I’m not a chocolate expert, I’m just one of those Brits that realise the many different ways that we are constantly “ripped off” and forced into buying mass produced cheap imitations. Take our Larger for example. Some big company like Interbrew get a bunch of Chemicals together, add a load of water then hey presto 2 days later it’s fit for human consumption and a label of either XXXX, fosters, or Stella is slapped on a bottle, then we idiots pay through the nose for it. :cheers

I’m ranting now aren’t I?
I’ll stop there for the time being. :?

There are actually storm clouds brewing in the EU (where else) over the term chocolate as applied to Cadbury's! EU regs stipulate a min value of cocoa solids, which Cadbury Dairy Milk does not have and so the arguement is that it is not chocolate at all....SHOCK HORROR!!! :wah

Of course as a Brummie and defender of the faith I have to support Cadbury's on principle! (<quite aside> I prefer plain, dark, bitter stuff myself  .........much like I like my women ;) ....but don't tell her indoors :hopeso ) :laugh :laugh :laugh :laugh :laugh

I'm sorry to say that as a dutch person and therefore brought up on proper chocolate from the continent BOTH types (British and NZ) of Cadbury shouldn't ever be called chocolate !! :booby
To be considered to chocolate, there should be a decent amount of cocoa (solids or liquor) in there. 70% preferably but am making do with 58% at this moment. I'm snacking on cooking chocolate from Moore Wilsons ( BEST food shop in Welly by far) right now, it comes in droplet form in 2 (!!) kilo bags and I'm allowed a few of them every night. Yum!

Cheers from a true chocaholic,

I am unreliably informed that the formulation for Cadbury chocolate ala hotter countries is different from the UK blend as it contains an ingredient that prevents it melting too easily in hotter climates!

Could just be bunkum but could also account for the different taste!

I'm with you Miep I like my Choc at 70%+ cocoa solids! I used to get some really good organic stuff from ASDA!

You can argue 'til you'Re blue in the face. You can say that NZ chocolate is more like it 'should' be .... you can go on and on and on.

I will back down on political issues regard EU directives, rights and wrongs of industires fat cats and the 3rd world debt but I will not ..... I repeat .... I WILL NOT ....... be swayed on this one.

Have you any idea how dangerous this could turn? A hormonal 41 year old woman going through the stress of relocating to the other side of the world having her faith in chocolate pulled to bits.

But... but... I haven't seen American chocolate mentioned anywhere!!

Personally, it matters not to me. I love American chocolate in its higher form (Ghirardelli), British chocolate (Thornton's), NZ, Belgium, Swiss, Mexican, German, you name it. Dark, milk, semi-sweet, bittersweet, it doesn't matter. Is there the hint of a cocoa bean in it? Beware; I'll sniff it out and make a grab for it. No one is safe.

I plan to dedicate a significant amount of my carry-on luggage allowance to Ghirardelli chocolate and will whine like a beaten dog at holidays for my family to send more. No shame. My husband prefers white chocolate, which so far as I'm concerned proves that Kiwis don't eat real chocolate. They do have those Tim Tams, though (I know they're Australian, but readily available in NZ -- thank god!!). And he's learned a lot while living in the States. Now I have to hide my special collection!

I love the idea of a chocolate party! Of course, I love any excuse to eat chocolate. I'll bring a generous amount to share with this lot -- we'll have fun sampling the international offerings!

Yours in chocolate addiction, Rae

Thorntons Rae ???

My word -we're moving towards the higher end of the market. I can't argue though - I'd like a 2 hour trolly dash around Thorntons any day of the week. Have to tried their special toffee too.

LOL, Diny, I didn't mean to imply I'm a chocolate snob.. chocolate slut is more like it!! But yes, I do adore Thornton's and have been known to make promises I had no intention of keeping to unsuspecting British friends in order to induce them to bring over Thornton's when they visit ("Hearst Castle? You bet!! I don't mind going along with you on a tour, even though I've seen it 45 times already!!"). Like I said... no shame.

Jess, I'm heading to San Francisco this weekend with my darling husband, whom I persuaded (browbeat) to go to the opera on Saturday night. Well, that's what I told him, anyway. The reality will be me with nose pressed to the glass of the Ghirardelli factory, wondering how much time I'd have to roll around in all that lovely liquid chocolate before the authorities are summoned.

I promise to pick up a few milk chocolate with double chocolate fillings for you.. sadly, they're just not likely to last long in my custody!! I'll think of you while I wolf them down, ok??

Well,

Just to turn this topic on it's head I have been doing a low carb diet.

Not if you're a chocoholic who doesn't mind making your own treats from scratch! Whilst your fat-fearing friends eat those nasty low-fat "desserts", you can make a rich chocolate mousse using cream, unsweetened chocolate, and an artificial sweetener (like sucralose). Remember, the more butterfat in the cream, the lower the carb count! Better yet, make chocolate ganache then dunk strawberries in it (or just grab a spoon and enjoy).

Have pity on me. I'm on a moderate-carb/very low-calorie diet (regular low-carb doesn't work for me) six days a week. I can only have chocolate on the seventh day. :wah

ce Cream!!!
Thats another thing we Brits like to spoil.
the Italians and Germans and the Dutch (mmmm Hagen Daas) make some really good examples. the brits.......

I hate to break the news to you, but Haagen Dazs isn't Dutch in origin. It's American. There wasn't a strong market for premium ice cream in the US at the time, so this new product was given a "foreign" name to convince buyers it was something exotic and worth the extra cost. It's very good ice cream, but it's from New Jersey!

MelissaLG
29th September 2004, 09:13 AM
Glad you mentioned that bit about Haagen Dazs, Coastcat. I only found out about that marketing gimmick a couple years ago. I think its funny how the American public will buy something just because they think its foreign or because some guy with an English accent is hawking it. Oh well.

This is the fastest growing thread I've seen here on this forum! People come out of the woodwork when there's a really important issue afoot.

As far as my .02 re: the great chocolate debate:

I grew up on Cadbury's (the British variety) and it will never be supplanted by any other brand as my ultimate definition of chocolate. Frankly, I don't care whether it contains turnips, used motor oil or formaldehyde - Cadbury's is chocolate itself!

That being said, I have to admit that recently I tried some brand I ran across in an airport( I've unfortunately forgotten the brandname- idiot!) that was composed of 73% cocoa solids and, ladies and gentlemen, it rocked my world. For a moment, Cadbury's was all but forgotten and for the first time my walnut sized brain considered the shocking possibilty that there might be more to the world of chocolate than my beloved Cadburys. :eek

One of the really tough things about living in the US all these years is putting up with the absolutely unacceptable American sweetie situation. Everytime I visited the UK, or my relatives came to visit, vast quantities of, Cadburys Hazelnut, Cadburys Flakes, Turkish Delights, Malteasers (oh rapture!), Crunchies, Mars Bars and Barretts Sherbert Fountains changed hands- sometimes at the stroke of midnight, involving, code words, alarmingly large sums of cash and brown paper bags, all primarily to avoid arousing my ever suspicious brother who would surely have inflicted bodily harm had he known that he was being bypassed in the ensuing orgiastic sweetie bacchanale.

Come to think of it, this should really be posted on the "Americans: reasons for leaving" thread. For as much as I despise the general unravelling of life, politically and culturally in America, if I'm really honest with myself, I can now see that subconsiously, it was the tantalizing prospect of living somewhere that had adopted a sweetie aesthetic that was more in line with my British roots!

It's frightening to contemplate, that in one of my weak moments, it's possible that George Bush could buy my vote with a mere couple of bags of Malteasers!

OK,OK, it'd have to be an awfully weak moment! :uhoh

Not to mention the days when wagon wheels were the size of a dustbin lid. And then there were the Milk Tray bars - they were well posh, the rich kids always had them and swanked around the playground with them.

do you mean to tell me that UK has other chocolates besides those?

WHY DID YOU BRITS HAVE TO STAY IN HONGKONG? WHY DIDN'T YOU GO DOWN TO MANILA AND INTRODUCED US TO YOUR CHOCOLATES TOO? :wah :wah

kidding...

Hi Annie and Jes,
I'm sending a box to my frind in Auckland. She said never forget her tons of Choc-nut. Nothing beats a homegrown deli. FYI. the shipping cost for a 20"x20"x20" box is NZ$165. So i'm filling it up to the brim (lots of Mamasita sauses, etc.)

hi jinkee

that's it, really, tons of chocnut to eat in nz! have the kiwis tasted that already?

don't forget your sinigang broth, ginisa mix, patis, toyo, dessicated coconut for gata! eesh, what will the kiwis say! we might be deported, you think? ("Egad! wot's that ghastly smell?" :? and we say, "oh, just, bagoong balayan :angel ")

bytheway, how did you pay the eoi? credit card? bank transfer? where?

:cheers

Hi Annie,
The 20"x20"x20" is what they call balikbayan box. My friend asked me to send her (aside from the Mamasitas and chocnut) native dining wares (plates, bowls, placmats, utensils, sandoks, etc). According to her, that's the closest thing she can do to feel "home".

I can give you the number of the courier if you want. It takes about a month before the box reaches NZ.

 i thought it was a different measurement for balikbayan boxes.
thanks! will the chocnuts survive?

great idea, the native dishes! there are a lot of those in bicol, i bought some when it was P10 per. and the native placemats, etc. baskets probably, bayongs!

are termites a problem in nz?
