No chance to actually wet a line yet as the rods are still on the container.
I have managed a few recce trips under the disguise of taking the family out to investigate the local area ;)
Here are some pics of places that are on the hit list for the weekend after next (container arrives on the 18th :clap )
Waimakariri Gorge looking downstream.

Adamsat,
Take it your talking about Fly venues and not the course variety? Shame if it is the fly, as i am of the course variety. Shame you can't fish for the trout on course gear, as you can here in the UK.
Never mind still taking my gear out with me.
Nice looking venues all the same.

Hi Adamsat,
Those venues look like they're screaming " TROUT " to me. very nice :nice1
As far as course fishing Kim, I too am a one of those who spend hours on the river bank only to return my catch at the end of the session, but I think that once I get out there I might be tempted to take up the fly from time to time and eat some of my catch.
Whatever floats your boat

Bubbles,
Got to agree with you. I am looking to wet a fly or two, along with some sea fishing. I know course fishing ain't high on the list of NZ anglers, but i know there is a bit to be had out there. Plus i have to give an account to my previous fishing club of what the fishing is like out there. One problem though. I AIN'T THERE YET :no

Who says you can't?
The regulations say that you must fish for trout using a rod and running line and an authorised lure.
An authorised lure can be a spinner, an artificial fly or natural bait (fly, insect, spider, worm, crustacian, fish or uncoloured bread dough).

Bring your coarse gear you can use it!

Timbo - you don't have to catch it yourself ;)
The law is that you can catch trout but you can't buy / sell it. You can, however, give it away so make friends with a trout fisherman (is that what u call them?!).

I am trying to get him to buy me a fishing rod so I can do some surf casting. So please put some posts on here asking him nicely to buy me a rod, thanks in advance :laugh :laugh

I can't wait to try out some of the superb waters I've seen and heard about, my problem is I hate trout so I'll be looking for people who like it but don't fish.
By the way I'm an expert salmon fisherman I've failed to catch a salmon in all the best rivers in Europe.

I've never tried salmon fishing before but intend to have a go now it's right on my doorstep. Seems a bit different over here. It's common to catch them from the beaches near the river mouths using surfcasting gear (or so I've been told)

To the other half of Jules.
Buy the girl a rod and reel you bad man ;)
if only you knew!
she wont touch the bait wether it be maggots/worms, she can't tie hooks, makes a mess of shotting up the float, wont touch the fish when she catch's them, forgets to open the bail arm when threading the line up the rod through the eyes, expects me to run round after her putting more bait on the hook, removing the hooked fish, untangle her line.
and then she would gloat that she was way ahead of me catching fish before i had even set myself up.
SHE CAN HAVE THE ROD WHEN I GET MY BOAT!

when/if I get a boat then mostly it will be used on the lakes around us, jigging/spinning for trout.
a crew would be welcome anytime, :cheers a few lion reds, trolling along the lakes

Come on lads, you were supposed to be on my side :laugh :laugh .
I want to fish for BIG fish in the sea, not these little tiddler trout things, I want to catch King Fish (I think that is what they are called, they were catching them on the fishing programme on Saturday evening) they were massive.
Support lads, support :laugh :laugh

Jules, yes they are King fish. Fantastic sport so I hear. Are you talking about "The fishing show" ? If so, we will soon be able to see it on-line, as the people behind it are going to stream it a week in arrears.

20th July 2005, 08:08 AM
Timbo, I just love Saturday evenings, there is a fishing show on One for half an hour, then switch over to Two and there is another show on for half an hour, its soooo exciting watching them catch the big fish :laugh :laugh
I wouldnt want to catch Marlin though because I like them and wouldnt want to hurt them :? sad really.
When Steve and I fished the canals back in the UK I got upset when Steve unhooked a fish and put it back in the water and it had already died :wah I am such a sad person :laugh but yes I admit to not putting maggots on the hook it is so gross :yes

Well my surfcasting efforts were about as successful as my UK attempts - in other words I blanked. :laugh I blame the number of surfers I had to share the beach with - perhaps fishing outside the surfclub wasn't the best idea I've ever had. :laugh
Still, 2 hours on Waikuku beach on a sunny winters afternoon/evening was a lot more pleasant than the equivalent time at Bradwell on Sea, and there's always next weekend - think I might try the Waimakariri. :cool
