My husgand is here in NZ on a skilled work permit we are going to apply for an EOI.
I want to know if to stay longer than the 6 months on a tourist visa do I need to apply for a work permit but not work.
I want to work but it is a chicken and egg situation. I cannot get a work permit without job and cannot get a job without a work permit.

If your husband has a Work Permit you can simply go and get one yourself - you don't need a job to get one. This will then negate your need to extend your visitors visa which will run out after the 6 mths anyway.

I may be wrong, but it could be a bad decision to let the tourist visa run out.
I'd follow Helen's advice....and often do.

Take your husbands passport with his permit etc in it with you. The reason for this is that they will a) want proof of his permit and b) your permit will be timed to run out at the same time as his.
I'd also take a few items of ID just in case.
Good Luck and it's a lovely feeling when you get that sticker in your passport :nice1

Hi
I have been into Hamilton this afternoon and it is quite straightward.
I just need to fill out the form take a copy of my husbands permit and they will issue you one without a job because he is a skilled worker.
Thank you for putting my mind at rest.
Susan
