Dear wifey has just commented on something that was bugging her for a while. When browsing the property sites she had always thought there was something odd about the housing and she says she's finally figured it out. On the types of property she's been viewing a large number of the properties appear to have NO internal window sills as we know them in the UK.

Anyone else noticed this, or has the emigration process finally driven my good lady over the edge of sanity :eek

No she is not insane, I think there's a queue for that.

I also noticed that lots of windows meet other windows at corners. Mmm I know what I mean there..... :uhoh

They are not in the middle of a wall, like here.

Ok I'm just behind her in that queue. :exit

We've got window sills... I remember that because I have to wipe water from condensation from the windows from them every morning! :uhoh

We have token wooden window sills inside but having just looked at them I suspect it is because most houses are timber frame with a weather protecting outer skin of brick or timber cladding. Our windows are attached to the timber frame so are therefore built in to the inner skin rather than the outer skin. We then have large stone sills covering the cavity and the outer brick skin.

We've got sills everywhere! :nice1

The only thing we don't have is an overflow in any of the sinks! :? Last house didn't have any either :nice1

Yes we have got window sills everywhere and I also agree with Moorf about the lack of overflows. Windows meeting at the corner with no frame is also a weird one. We had this in the rental. It looked very much like a large glass fish aquarium we had in the UK. The only thing keeping the windows together was silicone !!

Having recently moved into a house in the country we have woken up over the last three days to cows in the fields bordering our section. A word of warning to those who intend to buy houses in the country, surrounded by fields, the flies are hugh and the smell from the cows cr*p a bit like visiting Rotorua, the smell takes some getting used to. And this is in the winter !!

Hi, Pam & Dave!

We're planning on being in the country, probably near Cambridge too! :clap Shame about the flies... :eek
Did you buy or rent? We'll be getting there early Sept and looking for a country rental if at all possible - let me know if you see any! ;)

Hi Dinnaefash

We bought our place and as far as rentals are concerned, they are as "rare as hen's teeth" to use NZ estate agents terminology.
We will however keep our eyes and ears open and let you know if we find anything. This is a great part of NZ to live.

When we've been looking at property (a Sunday morning favorite with a cuppa tea and a bacon sarnie) we have noticed so many times that clothes lines are usually in the included lists (cant quite remeber what you call it now, you know the bit that says curtains, light fittings etc are to be left). Are they ultra expensive to buy or really hard to come across? Just think its a strange thing to included as if it would sway your decision to buy the house or not!
