Hi everyone, Going green with envy at hearing everyone taking off for NZ permanently... :wah  All the very best to you all, hope we'll be joining you in the not-too-distant future.
I can't remember where I saw it, but saw a reference to "good old-fashioned NZ values" on a website recently (NZIS?), and wondered what those would be. I guess if you asked people in the UK what g o-f British values would be, you'd get something about "fair play, tolerance, family life, privacy" etc. I don't mean to be provocative at all here and I'm sure that different people would give different responses, however, back to the point, how would you describe "g o-f NZ values" ?

When we are on long holidays, the kiwi neighbours help us with : :nice1
- mowing or watering the front lawn
- clear the posts
- keep an eye on our house
- pick us up from the airport (I guess we are very luck with this neighbour  )
The kiwi neighbours also offer to lend tools if there is a need to do up something in the house or the garden. :nice1
I would say establish good neighbourhood spirit and relationship is the "g o-f NZ values".
:cheers

People are polite and friendly and have manners with out thinking about it.
I was in a queue for an ATM the other day with some teenage girls behind me. One of them starting swearing about something, now I have heard back ground swering since I left the UK and was a little bit shocked. So I turned around and gave the girls 'a look' she shut up, blushed and apologised for her langugage!
to me its about good people looking out for other good people. Not just looking after number one and be d@med about the rest.

Thanks everybody, I really appreciate your replies, and love the sound of what you're saying. We are very lucky where we live currently (a suburb od Cardiff called Radyr), as much of the neighbourliness and kind spirit you mention still prevails, although according to recent UK surveys, this is quite rare! Friends of ours who live in Tauranga have commented on how neighbourly people are/were when they moved there, so good to hear it confirmed!
