Hiya,

The company Jamie works for is closing down, so not only does he loose his job but he also looses his car
Were not too worried as he can get another job pretty quickly, and lets face it, its only for a year. He's gutted though, cause his job at the moment is a very cushy number

Anyway, the conundrum is, do we buy a knackered banger that gets us through the next year (we dont mind driving round in old cars, mine is a K reg golf!), sell before we leave and except loosing a couple of hundred, OR, do we buy a nice newish Japanese car that we ship across and would be cheap for services and parts.

Anyone shipped a car across to NZ? What are the regualtions like and would the car have to be inspected by MAFF like other stuff taken across?
We've shipped a VW van over from OZ and that was relatively simple...please tell me a car to NZ is just the same

Very simple. If you go to the LTSA website it gives you the stuff your car needs to have in order to comply with NZ standards. We shipped over a 2002 VW beetle, it had the compliance plate on the chassis so NZ vanlines (the shipping agent this end) got the car taken to the AA testing station and I picked it up the next day, plates, rego and WOF done. Cost just over 500 dollars but that included 12 months rego and a WOF too.

It will get checked by MAF and customs, make sure it is SOO clean in case you get a jobs worth who is really fussy.

That's it! Oh and you have to have owned it for over 12months or you pay the GST on it (you can get this info on line about amounts etc.) and then if you sell it here within 2 years you have to pay back some duty. And you need to have receipt of the sale price - thats how they work out the duty I think, we had problems with that as hadn't kept the invoice from when we first bought it so that held up our whole shipment while we scrabbled round trying to contact the VW garage in the UK to get them to print one off from their records.

Hope that is of some use.

Sarah.

I also posed the car question to the forum (by poll) and the general concensus seemed to be leave it!

Therefore on that basis it would opt for the banger - however............

............... take a look on trademe and see if the the potential car you would buy (assuming you are allowed to take it due to regs) would sell well. Eg, take a look at Mini Coopers or something non-japanese and see if you would sell it for more than u would pay - allow £2K to get it there thoguh.

If i took mine we would need at 40ft (£5600) compared to a 20ft £3770) plus there would be fees in NZ (not a lot i dont think) to register it etc.

Hi Clarabell,

I thought about shipping, and decided against it.

I run around in an old Merc G Reg (that I don’t want to part with), its value here is about £500.
To get the same car NZ is around $5000 to $9000 (bizarrely).

Although I didn’t want to part with my car two things crossed my mind, did I want the hassle and cost.
The other thing is when in Rome!

I had a look on www.autotrader.co.nz and saw all the cars I’d never heard of.

The Nissan Skyline (and a laptop, lol) looks fun, so I’ll be shopping for a car when I get there.

Bob
