Katherine and I will be in NZ for our 'recon' trip the last 2 weeks in November. We know that Thanksgiving Day (Nov 24) is not an NZ holiday, but that's not going to deter us from a little celebration.

Q: Anyone know of anything happening on that date in Wellington (like some American community celebration or something of the sort)?

If not, we'll just have our own!

:cheers

Thanks!

In 2001 we were in NZ during November. Near Thanksgiving we happened be in Rotorua, and went to the Tamaki Brothers Maori cultural show & dinner. The spread, though not strictly Maori, was cooked hangi-style, and was a nice substitute for Turkey Day (kumara - yum!) I'm not sure if there's something similar near Welly, though.

Good luck on the recon!

Thanks - Something like that would be fun, too.

OBTW-> I grew up 'behind the redwood cutain', too. Escaped in '97 with my wife to Mpls, her stomping grounds.

We're in Eureka (Myrtletown). Where were you?

McKinleyville, Sacramento, Salinas, Half Moon Bay, Corte Madera. over a 30 year period. Last time I was up in Eureka was to scatter my Dad's ashes in the surf at Patrick's Point. Sad, yet glorious.

So I wonder if kauri trees are anything like redwoods...

Similar in grandeur, but different in form. We saw some lovely examples in a kauri reserve on the Coromandel Peninsula. It's east of Coromandel town on Highway 25. If you get up there, nearby is the Waiau Waterworks - great fun for children of any age. We must have spent an hour zipping down the flying fox, and more time playing with all the water "toys". No matter that it was raining - too much fun to be had.
