Could anyone offer some advice as to how they have dealt with this? My wife has a collection of jewellery, not especially valuable in monetery terms, but with some significant sentimental value. How have other people transported their jewellery to New Zealand. I don't really want to put it in the container, but her jewellery box weighs a ton!
Thanks for any advice.

Difficult one - if it wasn't for the weight I would say take it with you.
Can she not choose the most sentimental pieces and take those - then ship the rest.
THe only things we brought with us in that respect were photographs - and the odd piece of family jewellery.
But my photos - well they are so precious.....

The other way to do it is to take the special pieces with you and send the rest 'registered' post. It may cost a little more but at least it will be safer than putting them in the container. You could get a family member to send it after you arrive here.

Mine was all in my hand luggage, as they don't recommend putting it in hold baggage, but I only have a small jewellery box. Only item I could not bring because of that was a victoran ladies letter opener I have had for years (never used!) so ended up giving that to mum.
Container would not be a good idea especially if you have temperature sensitive stones in any peices, you may find also the temperature variations could tarnish some of the precious metal too.

We were told we couldnt ship jewellry in the container. Im afraid I dont know why.
So it came with us in the suitcases.
All of it arrived safely im glad to say!

You cannot get insurance for jewellery being shipped over in the container, so this is not a good idea.
All airlines say not to put jewellery in your baggage and carry it in hand luggage so I would suggest shipping the jewellery box and carry the jewellery in hand luggage.
