We arrived in Auckland on tourist visa and rented a place in Mt. Wellington.

The initial 2 weeks of arrival, Tony applied for IT jobs through recruitment agencies and he received lukewarm responses. We have no jobs and plenty of free time :D so we decided to take a walk to the industrial estate. On the way, Tony spotted a company's billboard that advertised it's software services. Taken note of the information, we rushed home and sent the resumes to that company by post. I gonna say that the postal service here is superb :nice1 The next day, the managing director contacted Tony for interviews and subsequently the job offer.

As for me, I waited till our container arrived before I started looking............

After couple weeks of futile job searching (rejected reply: no NZ experience). I circumvent the problem by going for temp job.

To register as a temp with a recruitment agency, I went through the following tests at one go, spending about 3 hours :
1) English language
2) Typing speed and accuracy
3) MS Word and Excel
4) Customer service - some sort of aptitude test
I received the results of all the tests on the spot. The agency contacted my ex-bosses for reference checks and one week later, I got a contract for temping.

While I was doing my 1st 2-week temp assignment, I spotted a company advertised in the paper, I applied for it and got the job offer. By the way, my present employer had done a reference check with the company that I have been temping for only 2 weeks - what a way to gain NZ experience !!!

GOOD LUCK & SUCCESS to your job searching :cheers

Thanks for that Ivy :nice1

I was particularly interested in your experiences with the temping agency. Did they have many short term contracts for admin work etc? Did you get work almost immediately?

And what sort of Excel test did you have?

I'd also be interested to hear from anyone who has had Council or Govt assessments as I have an hour long one on Saturday for a library job. :(

Cheers

Hello Moorf

The agency had plenty of short term admin work ranging from one day to a few weeks. I waited 2 days for my first assignment.

The only setback about temping is that you will be given very short notice, it could be the day before or on that very morning about 8 am (expect to report work by 9-9.30 am).

There is a software to test your Excel knowledge on operating the basic functions.

Good Luck and Success with your library job assessments and interviews :nice1

:cheers
