This is the first time in our life having a garden............

Now we have 80 metres of fence around our house and we need to do all the painting ourselves :wah . How do we get it done?

Any tips or methods of doing it with only 2 pairs of hands are most welcome :nice1

What kind of paints should we buy?
How many layers of painting are needed?
Any other things that we have to do?

:cheers

Spraying it would be quickest, as long as overspray is not going to be a problem.
Some paints are not very plant-friendly. We have a paint that clips onto the end of a hosepipe, but I find it easier to paint manually.
You'll have to have a go, Singel, and see what you think.
Have you seen the film 'Karate Kid' ?

In the UK Cuprinol do a fence spray which is very easy to use. Not sure if they have it in NZ

I'd say: Hand paint! Ever read Tom Sawyers way of painting the fence?

Hire an airless spray gun. I had to stain our new fence so started doing it by hand. After an hour I had only painted a few feet of fence so I gave up and took the fence mans advice.

Using the spray gun I was able to give both sides of the fence two coats in less than 3 hours. It also has the advantage of being able to reach areas you might struggle to paint just using a brush.

For DIY novice like us, painting these fences are uphill mammoth tasks.

Thanks John, Bailers, Hannah and Richard for your encouragement and tips :clap

John - we might need to learn the "kung-fu" from that movie :D

Bailers - this weekends, we will go to Mitre10 to see whether they have stock that fence spray.

Hannah - that is an interesting story ;)

Richard - how do they charge for hiring the spray gun (by hourly or day)?

We will let you know of our progress.

The company I hired from charged by the half day. I was able to pick it up at lunch time then return it first thing the next morning. I think it cost around $80. If I hadn't hired it I think I would still be painting the fence so it was $80 well spent!

Hmmm............80 bucks for half day, that is valuable for money :nice1

Thanks again, Richard :cheers

After we visited Mitre 10, we faced with agony regarding these :
1) What is the difference between painting and staining?
2) What is the advantages and disadvantages of having the wooden fenced painted or stained?

Any info or experience to share with, are greatly appreciated :nice1

My "fence man" will be back in half hour, I'll ask his advice for you! ;)

Singel

The advice from my fence man is to use paint, not a woodstain, as the paint will protect the fence better from the environment whereas the stain will be absorbed by the wood and won't give it protection. However, if you have a shared fence, you must make sure that the other party also paints the fence, otherwise painting one side won't protect the wood and you'll have wasted your time! ;)

He also advised putting on two coats using the sprayer - the first to be a 20% dilution of the paint - this will give a good base cover - then after the drying time apply a full strength coat.

Hope that helps a little!
