Just got an email back from Philips, and it will work in NZ with no changes
If you have brought a TV in the last couple of years, it may be
worth checking on the web to see if it is compatible, saves buying a new one over there.

I know I sound like a broken record - but also peeps, make sure your insurance covers "mechanical derangement" if you are shipping out electrical / electronic items. Otherwise, if the item isn't "damaged" i.e could have been dropped but you wouldn't know to look at it, yet it's not working, you may not be able to claim.. if you have mechanical derangement option you can claim for stuff that doesn't work when you get here!! (Note: this doesn't include stuff that doesn't work for technical / country specific type reasons, if you get my gist!).
Also, do a double check if you have already opted for mechanical derangement as some companies do actually specify that only domestic electrical, and not electronic, items are covered.... ;)

I also have a Philips TV, so this is great news! :nice1 It's only 1 year old, so I wasn't really planning on selling at home and buying in NZ again.
Thanks,
Ingrid

Yeah, not sure about derangement insurance, we've just gone for the minimum cover at 1.53% (Letton Percival), so I doubt it is covered. I'm sure if the item has been dropped hard enough for internal damage then it will have some visible marks.
As for TV compatability, if your TV doesn't work but has a scart connection then a relatively cheap way of 'converting' it is to buy a cheap VCR in NZ, which will de-code the audio for you and feed it to your TV via the scart
Cheers,
John

What about coverage for mental derangement? :D Or would they expect you to have been "undamaged" before the move?

Had someone round for another quote for shipping yesterday, amazing how you find different things from different people.
Mentioned the derangement insurance, and she said really nothing should happen, if it was knocked hard enough to damage it you would see it. But she was the only one to measure the TV to be crated. £120.
She advised not insuring every item (ie dvd's little things), as the only way they would be damaged was total loss and in that we would be covered for 40£ i think), for each item shipped, so we would get some compensation for the items not lost. As complete cargos very rarely get lost, I thought this was quite good. Also said we could do some self packing, not to seal the boxes though.
I will have to start comparing the shipping quotes soon. Ahhhh

Have got 2 more to go with coming to quote. Have received a few in writing already and it is mind boggling.
Lets compare notes and I'll post the quotes on here if no one objects. That is once I've got my head round them.
So far exactly the same goods vary from 350cuft to nearly 800cuft

How many quotes are you getting Deborah? We just went for four - I get confused with much more info than that:laugh . You'll need to post with all the quotes when you get them all in and in order!!

Hi Debs
I'm up to 8 and will have to stop there. If I've had 2 lots round in a day, I need a lie down when they are gone! I can now quote the FSA regs to them, but I'm not licenced.:laugh
We are going to wait til all the written stuff is in and have a brainstorming session.
I like the fact I can read on here what people think of their shippers service and if all the quotes are in a certain region, we will most likely go with the gut feeling and best recommendation, not glossy brochures and fancy do-dahs.
I just can't figure out how the cuft is so far apart. Does it mean someone has over or under estimated? What will happen if we go with a 20fter on their estimate and it doesn't go in. If it's something important what do we do apart from paying extra for 'groupage' ( which sounds like a bizarre swinging activity). we've thought about having an A and B list, but that's hard too.
Oh my head does hurt.....but I've still not met the mail order bride;)

:laugh :laugh :laugh Wow, now that's what I call research!! We had PSS, Curtiss and Sons and Crown - Crown look like a fab service but were over £4000 for a 20' container - whilst Curtiss were under £3000 - with four weeks free storage in the UK! The reviews on here for both companies have been good - and both reps seemed to know what they were talking about. So guess who we'll probably go with!! Lets face £1500 is nearly NZ$4000 - that's your initial rent and bond on a house and then some. We've got White and co coming at the end of the month but we may not even get them in yet, haven't decided.
No, we never met the mail order bride either - can you remember which company he was with? Maybe he doesn't do London and the Home Counties??

I've gone for Anglo Pacific, White and Co, Doree Bonner, Fourwinds, Bishops,
range from Groupage to Refer to you can't get Refer's for love nor money.
I worry about things not fitting or having so much space it is not worth it and should have gone for Groupage. Some included storage and insurance for 60 days which I thought was good.
Will do the same and post when I have analysed.
Not met the mail order bride either, had one that was 2 hours late and one that was early and asked if I could get there sooner as her previous appointment cancelled.
Makes life interesting.

Having same mind boggling experience with shipping quotes also!!! We have been quoted for a 40ft container from all of them - we have large wardrobe & pool table, plus lots of other stuff!!
Brittannia 1844cuft £6093 part packed or $6298 all packed.
(mentioned crate tv & only insure some items - could be same company as jo&Andy mentioned)
Allied Pickfords 1800cuft £5850
Anglo Pacific 1580cuft £6093
Curtiss (came to us after Kiwidebs) 60,79m3 (!!) £4800
All stated that they would bring container to house & load, however Curtiss said it would be best to pack & load into lorry, take to depot and then get extra bubblewrap packing before going into container! They seem cheaper (except that they cannot crate the pool table!) but not sure - did they say the same to you Kiwidebs?
I have emailed some of them questions today, so haven't decided who to use yet....when we finally sell the house that is!

How much cuft hav you got to fill your 20fter? is it your whole house contents
Karen
Curtiss said the same to us about packing at their warehouse after wrapping here at the house. I'm having nightmares about our stuff being squeezed into a container and the doors being forced shut.  when we're not looking.
