Lets say we decide to travel around within NZ for a couple of months, job hunting etc. Is there a way of getting your mail whilst on the move?
I know one can use a mail box number, but can you get it to follow you around?

Thankyou Glenda, that looks like it could be just the ticket.
Although the section giving more info. about mailing on the move has been taken offline for an update, I will watch that space.

Well, not having much luck here. I would like to get a po box or postal address of some sort (without resorting to using people folks if possible), but the travellers point have failed to respond to several e-mails, and the post office dont seem to have a way of setting anything up prior to arrival. Post restante would be good, but do I have to wait till we get there to set it up? The NZ post website doesnt have, as far as I can see, a way of doing what makes sense.

Timbo,
Did you find a solution to this problem?
We will be travelling around for a few weeks when we first arrive and then hope to settle in The North Shore, Auckland. But its quite a big place and it would be a pain to get a PO Box in Devonport and then end up living in Albany.

Tia. It seems that the post restante service is the best bet. You simply choose a PO location from the list given here;
http://www.nzpost.co.nz/Cultures/en.../PosteRestante/
and give the address of that post office in NZ as your forwarding ady for Royal Mail. You can then collect from that PO and/or give a further forwrd address within NZ at a nominal cost.
It sounded too simple to be true when I spoke to a guy at NZ PO hq the other night. But I have it on very good authority (thanks Smiler) that it works a treat.

Yes it does work.:clap :clap
It all seemed a bit laid back when I arranged it from the UK with a phone call but we went into the PO when we got here and lo and behold letters were waiting.

Hi smiler,
I am just looking into the P O Box thing.
How long did you have your mail re-directed?
Did it cost much?
Do restante charge every time you have stuff moved?

Hi Driver
We re-directed our mail from the Uk at a cost of £50ish each surname for 6 months.
Before we left, I called the kiwipost people here and they gave me the telephone number of the post branch nearest OH's to office. This is the link to the call centre and some more info http://www.nzpost.co.nz/Cultures/en-NZ/Personal/ManageMailDelivery/PosteRestante/
I spoke to the staff at the PO branch we wanted and TBH is all seemed a bit airy fairy. No worries, just address your mail here and we'll hold it til you get here :uhoh
But when we arrived we toddled in, showed our passports, waited for the inquisition but we were just given our mail. After we found our rental, back in, filled in a really easy form for re-direction of the re-direction from the UK, showed ID and paid $7. This is for 2 months and we need to renew next week.
You can also hire a PO Box to which you get a key but this is more expensive.
The mail arrives here to our house in 2 re-direction packs.:clap It is really easy.
You can leave it going to the post office branch if you want, and go in and collect it. Originally that's what we thought we would do, but OH doesn't want to spend his lunch in the queue.
I don't know how this works if you are travelling, we didn't do that. But I'm sure once you are out of the UK, Royal mail won't change the address of your re-direction.
Hope this helps, ask if there is any thing else.

Have just foun this thread.
We used (are still using) the Travellers Contact point service. We set up a redirection from the UK to the TCP address and then the TCP service has sent mail on to the three different locations we've lived at in the 5 months we've been here. It seems to work ok and the speed is pretty good. We've had letters take four days to get to us from posting in the UK, after going through 2 re-directions!

Yes Thanks Andy, sorted as of today. Our post was waiting for us in Whangarei care of post restante nz. If we pay $7, they will then forward it again. Excellant servaice so far.

We've opted to open a PO Box.
But, just wanted to warn people that there isn't always one available in your local area. We originally wanted one in Devonport, North Shore, Auckland. But, they didn't have any left, we could go on a waiting list, but it could be weeks or months before we got one.
We did manage to get one in Takapuna, North Shore, but we were told it was the last one.
I don't know if this is a common problem, or how often new ones become available, but its worth keeping it in mind when you are making plans.
