Hija,

Hubby is trying to find an apartment to rent in Auckland West (as near as possible to Henderson)

He is there without a visa (from South Africa - do not need a visa for up to 3 months), but has a joboffer, and the visa will take about 2 weeks.

He phoned for a flat to rent, but the real estate agent said that they couldn't rent to him without a work permit.

Obviously this is not the end of the world, but staying per day REALLY eat into the savings, so finding a flat sooner rather than later would be nice.

Does anybody know if private renters have the same attitude, or was this just this agent?

Cheers
Zel

tell him to try other agents as this sounds more like its a company policy rather than a legal requirement. I know of several people who have rented withourt a work visa. They may require that he shows proof of funds though.

We didn't have any trouble renting when we got here, and nobody even asked about our visa status. As Veronica said, it sounds like it's just that company's policy so try other agents, or even better, try and get something ptivately out of the paper. That way you don;t get stung by and agent letting fees! :yes

Thanx guys,
:nice1

WIll tell him to look at other places. Our timelines is a bit off, though. When I get up in the mornings, it is already 4 o'clock there, and when I go to sleep he is just getting up.

Make for interesting discussions about what happened/is happening today

Cheers

We've just rented in Christchurch without our visas through yet. The question wasn't even asked.

Although we went through an agent, we were very pleasantly suprised with the cost. They only took a bond of two weeks (often two months in the uk) and two weeks paid in advance with a small letting fee.

I saw the bond form and it required a permanent address by the person wanting to rent. If you just arrived in New Zealand and renting for the first time, what would your permanent address be?
