My OH has his big meeting with the Head Honcho of a Wellington Racking Company in Brighton this Thursday and we are getting a bit nervy to say the least!
Pauls job at the mo is as a Safety Inspector for Racking in warehouses , extremely boring but very specialised. At the mo noone inspects racking in NZ (bit of a worry if you work in a warehouse! eyes: )but this company want to set up their own division doing just that using Paul's experience and expertise to get things on the road.So... it sounds like a fab opportunity.
We asked the agency what to expect as far as salary and fringe benefits ie car , private health insurance etc but she said that are there no racking inspectors as yet in NZ she has no idea what such a position would pay or if there would be any benefits at all!
It would be nice if Paul could go along with a rough estimate in his mind as to the salary the job demands but we do not want to price ourseves out of the position nor recieve lower than what it is worth.
My cousins hubby is an engineer with Air New Zealand in Christchurch and he earns about $45,000 which we always thought was a fair whack. However people on this forum generally appear to earn more than that and we are told we would need more than that to live in Wellington anyway.
Any thoughts as always would be most welcome,

Denise

Two small comments. 1.) That would be a low wage especially for wellington. (Do you have kids? Do you work?) Even aiming for 50-55 would be good 2.)BUT at the same time, remember that they would be hiring you from overseas to do a job that essentially doesn't exist in NZ right now. So they probably don't know themselves, however if it does work out, and he gets the job and proves to be good at it, he will have a strong hand and if it is a good company they will reward that.

We live in Welly and came out 7 months ago, also with a more specialised career than NZ really goes for right now but things have worked well for us...maybe luck, who knows. Feel free to PM if you want any more specific help.

Sarah.

You have a skill that no one else in NZ has? Wow.

I picked up a peice of advise about negotiating on house prices - which (bear with me) works really well on wages to.

If your hubby tells the company what he will accept - they will not pay a penny more (generally speaking - anyway). If you say to the comapny - offer me what you think im worth, then you get to know thier top price. Bear in mind - if they dont get him to do the job - who else are they going to give the job to? It takes a strong constitution to do this but it can be worth it - it worked out for us anyway.

When we were looking at comparison wages - we wanted 3x UK total package. It may sound like a lot - but many goods here can cost more than 3x Uk prices so I personally think its only fair. We accepted way less than that (nearer 2x), but have now moved on and got almost 3x.

Depending on where you want to live in or around welly - $45k a yeat may not get you very far. We pay $540 a WEEK rent (for a central city apartment), money that is going to now be used to pay a $265k mortgage taken over 20 years. Just to give you some idea - friends living in Johnsonville pay $230 a week rent for a 3 bed semi.

Whatever you decide - best of luck.

Too right for the wage advice. When i was asked at the start of the interview process, what I was looking for as a starting salary I mentioned a figure that wouldn't be bad to start on.....so they gave me that.

Anyway it's better than starting for less!

Plus you can always move on and up once you are there!

I know what you means about the cost of certain things, linda still hasn't persuaded me to go and buy a years supply of shampoo yet, ......but she probably will.

Best of luck with that job.

Cheers
Paul

Sorry Denise,

Read the posts in the wrong order! Just found your reply. At least it makes life interesting for you!

If the worst comes to the worst I've just read that a NZ company has just bought Manston Airport. In the meantime Paul could get a job there and get some cheap flights to NZ if he hides amongst the cargo!
