Hi all

Has anyone who did not qualify under the normal visa rules for working in NZ, ever investigated the rules and regulations surrounding a person entering NZ and teleworking for a non-NZ based company?

Basically I am trying to find out if it is possible for me to enter NZ on the 9 month visitor visa but to telework for my employer here in Ireland? This would mean that my wages were still being paid into an Irish bank account and I would also be paying Irish tax. Unfortunately, at this time, other visa options (de facto, work, etc) are not open to me.

If anyone has enquired about this and has any information, it would be great to hear from you!

Cheers

Hi Irishgirl and welcome to the forum.

I can't see why you can't continue to telework for an overseas company whilst in NZ - you would simply come in on a visitors visa. I assume that during your time in NZ you will be looking for a job? Obviously, once the 9 month visa period has expired, you will have to leave the country if you haven't acquired a more permanent visa.

Once you have PR you can do what you want, my hubby is about to resume work for a UK company from here in NZ and will be paid by them from UK too, and there's no probs or laws against that.

Hi Moorf

Thanks for the response. Yes, that was what I thought too, but apparently any work carried out in NZ requires a visa or permit - even if your employer is not in NZ and you are being paid into an Irish bank account, paying Irish taxes! Well this was the answer given to my fiance by NZIS in Wellington yesterday!

But thankfully, the nice(r) people at NZIS in Wtgn kindly pointed out that I was eligible to apply for a temporary permit under the family/partnership scheme, which will allow me to work in NZ for up to 12 months, and as you mentioned, once I am in the country, I can started applying for PR (London office told me that I didn't qualify!).

It's going to be an interesting few weeks getting documentation together and keeping fingers, toes and everything else crossed that this works out - but will post my experiences and whether I am successful or not, as soon as I find out!

Again, thanks for your reply!
