I'm wondering if I need to have an inventory of everything in every box that I ship in the container? How else could the MAF know what they want to inspect? And if so, if I have my moving company pack for me, I can't imagine that they would do an inventory?

How does this work?

Crown made a list of all the boxes, numbered them, and put on a list what was contained in each one, ie Kitchen equipment, bedding, ornamants. garden tools etc, they do not list everythign you own, just a summary. This list has several copies, you get one they keep one and one comes to NZ where a further copy is sent to maf, maf then highlight what box numbers they want to see, advise the shippers and the shippers then keep those boxes to one side as they unload at your house.

Then maf turn up, open the boxes and inspect the contents, not always on the same day I hasten to add.

thats how it worked for us anyway, hope that helps

We actually set aside a box or 2 or stuff we KNEW maf would want to look at (we haev drinking horns and stuff like that). This is on the thoery that if you declare SOMETHING then thye look at that and dont go any further. However as it happens, they also said they wanted to look at another 2 boxes from the inventory that the shippers had done! Ho Hum - nice theory!

In one of my sons bedroom boxes, there was a selection of books, cd's, games and a clothes basket. The plastic fold away type.

The guys who packed it just put clothes basket on the box.

This went on the inventory, and as I expected it was set aside for MAF inspection. Them thinking it was whicker (basket)

A lot depends on what the packers put on the box.

I also had a box of food, tins, coffee , tea bags, salt, sugar, jars of stuff, horlicks, cadbury's drinking chocolate etc etc. This was labelled china!! And much to my delight, not one for inspection.

You know though, our removal co. threw the remains of the bubble wrap, tape, and paper into the back of the container before they sealed it, said it was for the guys on the other side. Well they didn't want it so they left it in our garage. So in the 24hrs before the MAF inspector came, we could have opened and removed certain items , If we had wanted to. We did actually open one of the boxes for inspection, as it had hubby's cordless drill in, and he wanted it to put together something.:laugh And then was able to re-seal as if nothing had been touched.

So, anybody due for inspection in my area and need any tape... just holler.:laugh

That sounds like great news. I had visions of myself running from room to room writing down each and every item that went in a box!

With Pickfords MAF inspected our stuff at their depot. (mainly garden furntinure, camping equipment etc)

I think this is because Pickfords had to reload our stuff from the container onto a transit van, as a container wouldn't get up our lane.

Pickfords in the UK labeled the boxes and then drew up a contents list when packing everything up.
