Everyone at work has known I've been going to NZ sometime in Q1 2006 since about May, though some still think I'm going to Canada (brrrrrr!) which was our intended destination last year before I luckily checked out NZIS and found the points had dropped!

I thought I'd give my Company plenty of advanced verbal notice to allow proper succession planning and they have been on the whole quite grateful and understanding. I've had a few problems though, which may be worth noting for others:-

1. I'm not getting half the new projects I used to have as most of them go into next year (actually not a bad thing from my blood pressure!) however the projects are piling up on other staff

2. My boss is asking me every time I see him, when am I going, as do the other 150 odd people at work (anoying) It doesnt help that I give a different answer everyday. I was away last week on holiday and the rumour when I got back was that I'd already gone! (Jeez!)

2. They wont recruit a replacement until I've give my 1 months notice, which I can see there point, but it puts my other staff under more pressure, as they are mates as well.

I went to see one the HR director the other day about this and he said the way around it is to give them a written 'intention of leaving letter' for the end of the year ..and (and this is the good/strange part) "If you do happen to get a job in NZ in October say, you can give us your normal 1 month notice, I'll rip up your letter and we will pay you until the end of the year", the bottom line is they seem to be giving me the option of getting 2 months paid leave.

I havent really got any problem with this as now I have PR I intended to go before this anyway, I also dont have any moral problem in taking the money for nothing but the question is should I get something in writing and risk the 'under the table agreement' or just trust them to keep the promise?

There not a bad company when push comes to shove so I'm tempted to write the letter and just keep reminding them verbally of the wonga they promise to keep paying me, also the thought of going to NZ in November to look for work while being paid sounds a bit too much like "Free beer tomorrow" - Two months I may even find that perfect IT job in Nelson (oooh, a flying pink elephant !!)

..Anyway off to the real estate sites to look for our beach home!

I would say get something in writing. That way you've got a binding agreement.

MH didn't tell his company that he may be emigrating until 4 months before we left. The only reason he told them was because he had arranged an external interview with the same company in NZ and for his ITA he needed proof of work experience ! !

I have to admit that I said on this forum I wouldn't tell people at work until 3 weeks before I left, 2-3 weeks notice being customary in the US.

Well, the subject came up in a weird way ("Have you ever thought about becoming a veterinarian?" "Well, actually....") and I told my boss I'd be leaving in December. Yikes! Now pretty much everyone knows.

I'm the only one here that does what I do (analyzing online scholarly journal usage and price data for the university), so my boss' main concern is how they're going to find someone qualified to replace me. Which I think is kind of funny, because I don't think the job is all that difficult or hard to learn, nor do I even have a master's in library science, which is kind of the baseline qualification for my job.

So far no repercussions, except for my boss' blood pressure. And I actually feel a bit more appreciated.

Get it in writing.
Signed in triplicate.
In blood.

My.. My.. what a trusting lot we are ;)

but I guess your all right, no harm in making sure it's all official (or at least I get a witness) and I've read too many dilbert cartoons to trust evil HR Directors :nice1

Ooooh Boz, they can't all be evil....in fact it's those NZ HR directors I'm relying on to giss a job.....(well at least one!)

Well, by a strange quirk of fate my wife, Gil, is also my boss . I'm really not sure how to break this New Zealand thing to her, she's already a bit suspicious.

Cardiff Irons (not that this implies I'm from Cardiff, or anything at all to do with that area, Gil, her family or dog).

Tee hee

Gary is also mine, but only in that he has one more share in the company than I do.

Luckily enough, his office is upstairs and mine is downstairs.THAT means I can hear his chair creak as he moves his bottom off it and then all the stairs creak on the way down and then he has to pad through the kitchen before he gets anywhere near my desk. But only because I've blocked up one of the lounge doors. :clap :clap :clap AND he doesn't realise why!! Plus he whistles and sings along to the radio so I can plot his movements by the sounds. tee hee again.

Deborah:DMade me laugh out loud, in a Friday evening, had a couple of Tetleys, kind'a way.

Be careful Gary doesn't make a stealth attack involving invisible to the naked eyes cables, pulleys and camouflage clothing. Obviously he'd observe radio silence and operate a non-whistling policy for the duration of the attack.

Don't want to scare you, but it could happen .

On days when I'm in the office, we share office space so we're less than 1 metre apart. Cardiff Irons has suggested that he gets tons more work done when I'm out, can't think why. And I can instantly detect if he move his creaky bottom towards the kitchen.....

I have laughed so much in a friday nite, NZ Marlborough Chardonnay kinda way, Gary thought I was having a fit. I've had to 'fess up.......................

Radio silence  Oh if only you knew the rest of the story, 2 more glasses and I might spill all.

Any spilling mistakes are because I'm laughing too much, not drinking too much:p
D

Creaky bottom :laugh :laugh Oh Gil!
