Do they mail order? And what are thier prices like?

The ones here in Welly are ultra expensive - and the lady in Cool Britania is honestly the most miserable person in the city - im sure of it!

We have found the best prices are at Ontrays in Petone - but its a small range of english foods - however they are the only place ive seen colemans Tartare Sauce!

The ironic thing here is, if someone opened a shop along the same lines in Britain tommorrow, they would be told within hours to take down the Union flag cos it would be deemed racist.
Out of curiosity Jan, is the place Kiwi or Pom owned?

jan

Not sure actually who owns it. I know the lady who runs it is from Jo B's territory!!
Just along the road from where I used to work too.
She has lived here 23 years and still has a strong Wigan accent.

I will endeavour to find out tho.

I just know its $2.50 for a packet of Walkers crisp!!!
Someone told me today it was $32 for a box of 30ish weetabix!!!

I'm sorry, but I wouldn't be that nostalgic to be going paying those prices! Isn't there a local equivalent of the big brands? Wattie's = Heinz?
When in Cyprus and Greece, they have a range of crisps called Lay's. They are almost identical in looks and taste to Walkers, and reading the ingredients they were a damn site healthier too/less fat.
Each to their own.

Actually to add to that. I am not that attached to any particular brand I am really a mend and make do person and if my kids whinge then they don't eat 'til the next meal simple as that!!! Now they eat curry and all sorts and the little 'uns only 6. (althoug he doesn't like tomato's but he never has from being a baby spat out baby meals if it had tomato in, still trying on that one though)

Harsh but life's lessons are harsh.

I found I preferred weet bix to weetabix.
and if I don't like the crisps then I will loose weight!!

In fact I think I am getting really tight with my money already and I am not yet earning nz dollars.:laugh

My Dad sells mushy peas, yorkshire tea, penguins etc from his supermarket in Havelock North - so I would check the local supermarkets to see if they have a small range - it might be cheaper than the specialist shops!

.

Ahhh, if only it were that simple!

Most brits Ive come across here do not buy into the Watties = Heinz thing. Its the same make - but a different recipe, and to many people it tastes like crap! Interestingly - someone has explained to me that its proably because NZ didnt have to go through rationing - so they didnt cut the sugar usage. Hense they have much sweeter tastes than we do.

Im horrified at how sweet things are here - having finally lost my sweet tooth, many things here just make me feel sick! Compare watties baked beans and Heinz baked beans and you ae like to taste a difference.

My big probelm is that bacon has so much sugar in it that its sweet. Not only am I dying to taste beacon that tastes like meat and not sweets, I cant eat sugar anyway - so Im stuffed! The ther one for me is Mayonnaise. Its revolting here. Its like putting syrup on your salad! Thank the stars another brit told me Best Foods Real Mayonnaise IS Hellmans. saved my life (not to mention my waistline!) I even have to get Rowntrees Sugar Free jelly posted to me because the sugar free stuff here (Weightwatchers) has so much aspartame in it it practially glows (and tastes disgustingly sweet and bitter at the same time)

Swings and roundabouts like everything - yo may find you are fine - it doesnt bother some people. Ive struggled due to dietary restrictions and being a bit fussy about processed foods.

If I personally did as the romans do id be the size of a house :laugh :laugh :laugh

I agree, Watties is nothing like Heinz and is, imho, gross. But... I'm not paying $4 for a tin of Heinz English Recipe baked beans so we eat Oak Baked Beans which, in my opinion, is the closest to UK Heinz as possible. I'm not THAT adverse to the odd Heinz English Recipe baked beans though as a comfort binge and have a small supply.....:D I do, however, buy Heinz Tomato Sauce as Watties' is, also imho, like paint strippper and I couldn't find a local alternative....

I am also mayo freak so I was DELIGHTED to find out when we arrived that Hellmans = Best Foods :nice1 my waistline was not so delighted :no and of course Ourmate is the NZ version of British Marmite! (DON'T touch what they call Marmite here .. bleeuurrgghh). Colmans English mustard is readily available here.

I am sure that the Nescafe here isn't the same - but it's still better than Greggs!

Hey Jan - are they Bisto granules I can see on the right in the window of that shop.... yep, it is!! *make way for the stampede* :exit

Have to agree Vegemite is NOT in any way comparable to Marmite, its much weaker in strength. BUT on the other hand its half the price of Our Mate and I cant justify spending double the amount, for a jar half the size, so Vegemite it is..... you get used to it, honest!

I think we have had one tin of Watties beans, but now use Oak, they are not so sweet. and I am sure Special K taste different over here, the corn flakes certainly do, hubby east Pams corn flakes now, says they are more like UK cornflakes!

ugh! and I had the impression that the NZ lot were a healthier bunch???

We don't like buying processed stuff, but as with most kids they like their beans, bacon butties and chips (Oven)

the bacon here has too much salt, but I never knew that they put sugar in it??

I think I will have to become a pig farmer (current boss has "posh" pigs and sells bangers at £3 a pound!).....here piggy piggy..... :laugh
