Hello all, this is my first time starting a thread and although I have had a good look through all that has been said so far I still haven't found an answer. My boyfriend and I are looking to emigrate late next year in order to join the rest of my family. I have been keeping an eye on the process and have noticed that the medical has changed recently. It seems that the HIV and Hepatitis test are now compulsory for all. Is this new?? I am confused! Also, are there any other compulsory tests that I haven't discovered yet? I know about the chest Xray, but am trying to get an idea of how much will will have to put aside just to apply. Would appreciate any info and advice.

Hi Becca
Welcome to the forum. :D
I'm not sure I can answer your question directly. We had our medicals a couple of months ago and had our blood tested, but I'm not sure when those regulations started.
Are you in the UK? If so, when you get to medical time, ring round the panel docs and get some prices. They do differ and you can save some cash. :nice1
We paid £180 each and that included blood tests, x rays and the exam by the doc. Leave some time to do this too as many docs get booked up. Our one only did it on tuesdays ( on his way back from golf) hence the wait can be some weeks for popular cheaper docs.
Anyway hope this helps a little. Some one with more knowledge than me will be along in a bit. :o
Where are your family in NZ and what do you do now?

Thanks for the info, will certainly make sure to shop around. Hope our visit to the family goes ok in March. They haven't met my boyfriend yet so fingers crossed!! We are in the UK (for the moment!) but hope to join the family in the next year or so. They are in the gorgeous Bay of Islands but we are not sure where we will settle as it will depend on jobs. We are hoping to get married over there too, so there will be changes all round.

Hi
Medicals are cheaper over here... we had medicals in UK (2 adults & 2 kids) Twice!,
due to a delay in the whole emigration process. The first time we had them done in the UK, my hubby was told he had a shadow on his lung....which threw us into a major panic, turned out to be a tiny bit of scar tissue and nothing at all to worry about!. The second time he was told he had an enlarged heart, so as timing was tight at that time we spent nearly a further 600 pounds having tests privately.....and guess what it turned out to absolutely nothing.
It does make me wonder...If you maybe get a GP who plays golf with a private consultant that they don't slip each other a bit of business now and again!!....seeeing as you are desperate to get out, theyhave you over a bit of a barrel!
We had to have our medical here in NZ, again, due to bad timing yet again...he...ho!. totally dreading what they might tell us!..... It was so straight forward... book in the day after next , cost next to nothing! all with a pleasing outcome!
My advice would be to get them done here if at all possible!

for info, I spoke to a panel dr yesterday who informed me that the NZIS will only accept pre August forms till 28th November.
the price for 4 adults (kids age 15 classed as adult! typical) on old forms is £660 and with new forms it jumps to an astronomical £1,080!!!! :wah
cheers

If you get the chance have it done in Thailand or Singapore. There are listed hospitals for each country allowed by NZIS and the service, hospitals, professionalism, speed of service, speed of results and amenities knock spots off the UK. We had ours done in a hospital that was better than any public or private hospital I have ever seen. Hospital even has 5 restaurants in it!
Adult test inc x rays, blood etc = approx £30 each
Child (without X-rays or blood) = approx £12 each
We had 2 adults and one child done in approx 2.5 hours and the results we picked up the next day. If anyone wants more info i will try and get it or start a new thread i suppose.

yes - They are still the current old ones - we just used for a 2nd child who is a few weeks old yesterday! I mean the baby had medical yesterday (do not want to rub it in but this time cost us about £5 as the baby was at the hospital for vaccinations and check up etc- whole bill for baby was equivalent of £12.30 including hep B vaccine, check up and medical- cannot be bad). But the wifes check up by the
doctor 1 month after giving birth was £14 which we actually thought was a bit pricey (think they made a mistake on the bill by charging about £5 for medecine that she did not have but we did not complain as everything else so good_ the wife said it was probably for the free coffees, canape cakes and milk that we had - I kid you not

Hi to the replys to my last post. :raebanana
Thanks UKtoKiwi, I have booked our meds for 4th Oct, have to ring the X-Ray dept on monday to coordinate them before the meds and Bloods.
I never thought that there would be such a difference in price, but even with the new forms you can save a packet by ringing around and traveling a bit.
shame that the docs in Hull are so greedy :(

Hi Kat and Bob,
Sorry about that, I thought you're medicals had been done and stamped March 2004 (probably 'cos that happened to us!) I was obviously on the wrong horse, which was up the wrong tree, holding a stick at the wrong end!
It's great fun, isn't it..... how they (NZIS) keep changing the forms, and keep you in a constant state of panic!
Hope it all works out!

Thanks guys,
I am going to ring our nearest Panel dr in Hull and say that Sheffield are charging less, and that it seems a shame that my "Local Panel Dr is going to miss out on some money....and will they match the price???....
:D well no harm in trying is there!!! :nice1

Just been to our docs today with Mika, she is one of listed doctors to do the NZ medicals so I asked a few questions whilst I was there. She told me that on the new medical which will be used from Nov, there are more thean 7 blood tests to do, at £15 each, instead of only 2 that were done previously.
She told me to get them done before November but with there been a 3 month validity on them we can't do this so we'll just have to grin and bear the extra cost!
Also told me to make sure tetenus (sp) was up to date, now wasn't sure if this for the medical or just for our trip out there?! But gonna book one anyway, haven't had one for ages :(

Are you sure your conclusion is correct re
"get them done before November but with there been a 3 month validity on them we can't do this so we'll just have to grin and bear the extra cost!"
Are you saying that the tests need to be done within 3 months of you going to NZ?
Surely the 3 months relates to when your application goes in? At least it does with ours I think.
By the time we go to NZ the medical tests for 3 of our family will have been done about 15 months earlier and a 4th one about 7 months earlier. I do not think we will have to do them again.
Maybe it is different for different types of visa?
And maybe you are not applying until much later than Nov 05?

We don't have enough points yet to apply. We are going for a reccy trip in Jan and hope that Kev can make some contacts and possibly have some interviews and get a job offer (hopefully) so until we get back we can't move anything along!
Hope this clears up my previous post! ;)

Well you could always stop over and get medicals from Singapore ? at them prices its worth the price of a day or two stopover, and you could take every other form over with you and do the lot over there?
(I may be wrong but who knows!)
but then I would be left here waiting till sept :no I said shall we do a reccy after the wedding in May - and the eldest went mental :D saying we'd have too much fun acting like singlys and forget them and leave them with their grans foreva :D I wish! she'd send em after us!!

Might see you there - we have our medicals in Sheffield on Oct 4th (X-rays in one place at 9a.m. and meds in another at 11a.m.) - you will recognise me as I'll be the one probably looking stressed trying to keep our 4 children de-stresse, amused, fed and watered all day ! No probs at work though - being the boss sometimes has its advantages,

Pooh - this medical issue is really getting confusing. I am in Germany, and our GP told me he cannot do it in time, because they are totally booked. It is also not entirely clear if it would be accepted at all by the NZ immigration service if my GP would do the tests. he said we probably need to have it done at the public health service, where the prices already are astronomical, plus they do not speak English and will want certified translations of the forms for all three of us to German, which then have to be translated back to English for NZ immi. The costs for all this could easily amount to something like € 3000. Money is more and more becoming a grave issue in this game.

I don't know if you have your ITA pack yet but if you do there is a list of panel Dr who can do the medicals and Xrays for each country included. If you dont have it go to the NZIS web pg and search panel Dr and it will give you the list of who can and who can't do your medicals. Panel dr should be familiar with the form and with luck you should find one that will not need it translated. Hope it works out for you.

To reinforce what was just said.
Unless you get a written authority to use an alternative medical examiner for your medicals (which could occur due to certain circumstances) you have to get your medicals done at a NZIS approved (listed) doctor, clinic or hospital.
The ones listed would generally be competitively priced and certainly you would not have to have translations etc.. If however Germany was still too high a price you might want to consider having it done in another country when you are visiting such a place, if you are doing so, or even if you were next to a border etc.. Good luck

Hi everyone.
I now have the costs for the medicals here in Germany. There is a panel Doctor in the nearby (to where we live) city of Dortmund. The new medical comes to a total of 278 Euro (190 Pounds) plus 16% vat for each adult. For our little Sophie (now 17 months) it is 53 Euro + tax. For Yvette (my wife) the X-Ray will be deducted, because she is pregnant (-30 Euro).
For some of you that may be interesting, depending on the costs in the UK - Dortmund can be reached by Easyjet via Luton for next to nothing, and if you happen to go to the region anyway... There also are other panel Doctors here, and the total costs are quite a bit lower than I had thought. So yes - they are competitively priced. Normally private medicals are easily twice that price or more.
