thanks, well you did ask!
What is it like in the more rural areas, ie getting to and from work, College/University. I want to live in a rural area (would like land and horses!) but we also need to be near work/college as my hubby is a Sheetmetal worker and my eldest is training as a Plater.
and my youngest will be ready to start at college by the time we arrive.
My hubby has had a few job offers around Christchurch and Dunedin, and we have looked at the websites for the area, so it is one of the areas we are interested in.

OK.
I want a 200m2 house with 1000m2 land + with few naighbours, on hills or rural but within 30min commute of ChCh center, $400k or so and I'd prefer it to be near a beach and built to modern standards in a decent area... :)

Hi Paul Lisa and family
How very noble of you to offer your help to us poor needy people.
I am bringing my dog with me but because I don't know yet where abouts in Christchurch we are going to end up and how long it's going to take to buy a house etc I need to kennel the dog for about 6to 8 weeks. can you recommend some kennels give some some e-mail address, one fairly close to the airport would be a good start as I am hoping to get the kennels to collect him from the airport initally.
thanks for any info

Hiya , I have looked for kennals and there are quite a few , especailly near us but not many near the airport area. One at Harwood, 105 hussley rd on 03 359 6888,called Donquest seems the closest , but that it. What kind of dog is it and whats its size and temperment? and how long for ? can you see where im heading, my wife would kill me !! lol, I can give you a list of loads , but none other than the above are really anywhere near. Dont suppose a kennel near an airport is too good of in idea, maybe thats why. any hope this helps and i await your reply.
Also you could look in the yellow pages on line at www.yellowpages.co.nz . I could ring a few for the rates if you want to give me some more details etc as calling is free here. you look at some in yellow pages and ill phone ones you like, if that suits you.

hiya , not sure if you realise but other than the Port hills areas which are expensive and you have to be a mountain goat to live up there, most of the surrounding areas of christchurch are on the canterbury plains and are flat, with no hills.
The nearest hills north are heading towards amberley and these are small rolling hills. Its probably further than 30 mins away, maybe 45ish. but really once you have driven 20 mins in any direction from the city center, you are in rural NZ and its lovely. One area i would sugest is over the Tai Tapu area, halswell, anywhere on that route to Akaroa. Its a continuation of the port hills but not as popular but can be expensive, not sure what you would get out there, if anything for $400k. One thing to consider when you buy is whether you want a rural lifestyle, a sea side one or a mountain one.... this really depicts which area suits most people. I personally wanted rural, 25-30 mins away , but close to the sea, so we chose Kaiapoi , it would suit your needs as its only 4km away from sea and has a lovel town feel to it with nice shops etc and is part of the waimakarari district, not christchurch city. or Woodend is nice and ba bit further north, Rangiora is also a nice area , but a bit further inland. you will get a nice new house for early 400s in any of these areas and as i have just come out of selling real estate, i know the prices quite well. There are no hills here though, until Amberley , its flat and good for riding a bike!!!. Hope this helps and ask anything else if you wish

Hi psh12001 ,
I was joking a little, wanting 'it all' and for a measly $400k too...
We'll take our time when we get there looking at areas, and were keen on a self build straw bale house anyhow. Hopefully we can do it.
Thanks for the reply, very informative :)

Hiya, No worries, but if you want to look at what you can buy for your money in various locations, the real estate institue has a web site at www.realenz.co.nz its a great site and has most agents listings on it. Remember that we are in the waimakariri DC when you search areas. happy searching and if you find one let me know
cheers

Have you seen these people:

They seem to have some good info on straw bale. I just worry about being so close to the sea with it, but otherwise I love them. Hopefully we'll be over by the time you start building so we can help!

Hi Paul
Sorry it's taken me a few days to get back to you but been busy at work you know how it is.
In answer to your question my dog is a mongrel a little bit bigger than a cocker spaniel. He is a rescue dog and is not the best behaved towards other dogs if I am honest, he tends to bark and go berserk bless him but he's my boy.
I would be really gratfuel if you could ring the kennels you recommended and find out their rates, could you also ask if they are prepared to collect from christchurch airport if necessary. We are probably looking at 6-8 weeks while we buy a place so that he has somewhere permenant to go.
Thanks for your help Nicquie
