Not exactly a recommendation Deborah, but a possible option.

See what you think. It would certainly save a few $$

We stayed in the Mercure on The Terrace. If you go straight to their website you can usually get some really good ideas. It certainly wasn't 5 star but after the plane journey you don't really care where you sleep.

There are a number of backpacker's accomodations. Am not sure of their quality, but in the Courtenay district is the Cambridge Hotel, a youth hostel and probably more. The neighborhood is nice, and it's close to a supermarket (New World), Te Papa, the waterfront, theatres and a cinema, at least one microbrewery/brew pub and many cafes and restaurants. If you fancy a walk in the woods (as it were), the Mount Victoria domain is nearby. From what I hear, the backpackers have private ensuite rooms as well as dorm-style accomodations. We'll probably go the backpacker's route when we land next time.

If you dont want to be in the centre of Wellington, but right on the train line - and one or two stations out of Wellington this is a lovely motel.

And we are 100m walk away!

I know you have got sorted, but in case anyone in the future needs it:

We stayed at teh J Street Apartments this time. Its part of the Quest chain, but waaayy better than any of teh other quests we have stayed at.

Reasonable price (for welly) - we booked through Ratestogo. We were very well looked after by the owners, and the apartment was lovely (some Ive satyed in in welly are VERY cramped.

On rates to go it also got a very high rating - which is given by the people who book it. Many people go back there. Its also right in the heart of the CBD.

Cheers.
