I just found a great site:
http://photosoc.wellington.net.nz/24hrs/2002/
It's sort of a 24 hours in the life of the city of Wellington, from the photographic society of Wellington. I had a few nagging questions, like could I row crew there? Does everyone dress in black all the time? Do med students run in ladies underwear?
This page has cleared all that up.

I visited Wellington (Auckland and Christchurch too) this past July. I took a ton of photos of the different cities to show my husband when I got back - we are still trying to figure out where we want to move to. My friends here don't seem too excited about my photos (they're mostly day-to-day places like neighborhoods and parks - under cloudy skies), but I thought a few people here might find them interesting as they wonder what these places really look like (in the middle of winter) so I posted them on shutterfly:
nzphotos.shutterfly.com
I quickly added a few captions when I could remember where the photo was taken.

the lakes were in Karori santuary. Here's a clip from my Wisesmaps. The black line shows where I walked/bused the day I took those photos.
