In anticipation of receiving PR in the near future, we're coming to Wellington for a one week visit in October. The primary purpose of this trip is to see if there are any job opportunities.
I've contacted several companies and tried to set up face-to-face interviews. The problem is that I seem to just receive a standard 'you don't have firm residency plans and let us know when you do' message.
I have two questions which I hope someone can help me with:
1) Should I wait until I arrive and then call potential employers? This plan worries me because I'll only be there from the 20th through the 26th.
2) Does anyone know of a reputable consulting/recruiting agency for technology project managers? I have years of experience and PMP certification, so I'm hoping that will help get me a position.
Any help or thoughts are greatly appreciated. I don't think I can move my family without a really clear idea that there are jobs available.
Thanks!

Did you tell them you would be in town on specific dates? That seemed to make a difference with me. Even then, you will still find some people will not take you seriously unless you have moved here. My advice is keep trying and in your cover letter say something like I will be in town on such and such dates and then will be moving as a PR on XX date. It is a bit premature I realize but if you have your ITA and your file is in good shape you should be fine. They want to know when you will be here for sure to start work.
Hope that helps.

Here is the approach we are probably going to take (see thread):

Here's an not so old link I started off a wee while ago (I don't believe I am saying that - wee and heaps - typical NZ slang :laugh ) :

Get in touch with QIDR (www.qidr.co.nz) ask for Ben Pearce or Tenille Bennet. Ben is one of the partners and they really couldn't do enough for me (tell them Dave G from the UK advised you).
Both Ben and Tenille had a job offer for me on the same day so I had to choose (Tenille won).
They did take a week to put the feelers out though so maybe you need to approach them a week or so before you arrive so that when you do you can hit the ground running (as it were - short runway into Wellington by the way).
They are aware of completing the Employers Supplementry for your Work Permit and can help you big time.
Hays IT had some ProjMgt work but not quick at getting back to you.
Also, Project Managers tend to be contractors as there is not a great deal of permanant PM work here.
Good luck and get in touch when your here.

Dave,
Do you think it would work to contact them the day I arrive and ask to meet? Then as soon as I have a firm date for NZ, then they can begin the serious recruiting process?
Realistically, I don't think I'll be able to start work until December and from previous posts, Dec/Jan appears to be a bad time to look for work. But for the right job, I could start in November...
I won't be able to finalize and send out our PR until the first week of November (we need our passports to travel there in October).

I would get your CV to them first and follow up with a phone call a day or two before so you can arrange a meeting with them.
All of the agencies want to meet you just to make sure you don't have 2 heads etc but I don't know about doing it the day you arrive in case some are not available.
I may go one better soon as one of them (Tenille) is popping into our office next week for one reason or another so I can always ask what's best in their point of view?
What sort of job role are you after?
