I can't find this already posted so:

What credit cards are typically accepted in NZ? Do they need to be from an NZ bank? I know American Express is different, but typically Visa and MasterCard are managed by a bank, in my case, an American one. I'm planning on bringing traveler's checks when I head over but I want to be prepared just in case.

Thanks!

Susan

You see Visa signs most commonly, but Amex and Mastercard seem to be taken most places too. We used our UK cards for about a week, until we got a NZ one.

Its only really the smaller independent places that take cash/eftpos only.

Thanks JubJub. That is good to know. I'd rather use a credit card as-needed so I can manage my spending better. Cash just seems to evaporate out of my hands!

Just be sure of how much your credit card company charges for foreign transactions. It can be an unpleasant surprise if you're not expecting it. Also, you may want to inform your card company that you are traveling to NZ. Sometimes they will freeze a card if "unusual" transactions occur. This is nice if someone has stolen your card, but annoying if you're traveling and need the funds.
