So,

what do the Americans miss from home? What is shockingly expensive and I should stock up on here (books?)? I keep hearing from the UK folks, but I know it won't be a matter of missing gravy granules for me. Perhaps Mexican food?

I already know what I will miss... Food, Mexican specifically, Whole Foods the most, efficient STRAIGHT roads/ highways, and satellite radio. I also think about our convienent lifestyles too, that may be hard to adjust to. Although I hate Wal-Mart, there is a very nice 24 hour superstore close to me now...

That's funny, leo... one of the things I most look forward to is escaping from the "convenient" lifestyle! ... but I certainly know what you mean about satellite radio -- I think I'll need counseling when I have to give that up! :wah

Well, first on the list would be American macaroni and cheese, blue cheese salad dressing, Taco Bell and metal curtain hooks. Just a few things really and no big deal. By the way, there is no Capn' Crunch here.

Luckily, my best friend just sent me a blue cheese and Capn' Crunch care package.

Me too actually... I think convenience has made our society something ugly, BUT when my 120 pound dog got sprayed by a skunk at 1:30 in the morning last year it sure was nice to be able to run to Wal Mart or QT and get some tomato juice to relieve him! I will be living a most inconvenient lifestyle in rural NZ, and I can't wait!

Oh I will also miss netflix, but I think they are develpoing that...
Michele, what is that rumour about rubbing alchohol being like gold in NZ? Is it true?
I hope there is a lot of cereal....

I was thinking of shipping some refried beans in my container. I have a good "from scratch" salsa recipe, so that should do. Oh dear, I do love blue cheese.

I know what I'm going to miss - Ben & Jerry's Chubby Hubby ice cream. Chocolate, peanut butter and pretzels mmmmmmmmmmmm

Too bad it won't survive shipping :-)

Can't say we miss all that much, family is hardest. You can get refried beans and tortillas at the markets here. We did ship over a bunch of hot sauce which you get here it just costs more.

Some things are expensive but it is easy enough to give them up. Roads are not straight but distances are smaller and much more to see.

TV is farily bad, but I gather we will get US fall TV in another month or two.

I have to say we have not been having problems with getting things most of what we are used to is here.

As to things to stuff in a container, faucets are expensive here as are door knobs/ dead bolts and most hardeware. Bring all of your tools even if they are 120 just buy a converter.

I haven't actually needed any alcohol yet. If I remember correctly, someone here said all they have are the little bottles, like the travel size ones.

I miss netflix as well, but they have something like that over here. I don't remember the website, but it does exist.

You donn't have to miss american TV. You can't watch it live, but if you have broadband, you can watch nearly anything by the next day. As long as you don't mind watching it on your computer, or connecting a computer to your TV, like I did.

Just Google for "Bittorrent"
