when we did up our house we had bits and pieces of furniture made for us out of wood and mdf. it has all been liberally painted for some time and will be again on arrival - will it still have to be fumigated?

My understanding from writing to MAF on this point is that no, it does not require any special fumigation or treatment. You will want to inspect all wood furniture items for evidence of insect infestation (borers, etc.), but if there is nothing like that, you have no worries. MAF may want to inspect it, but they're not likely to treat it.
