Should I stock up on Marks and Sparks Undies etc YES
Suits for Andy. Clothes for me. YES YES
Sheets / Duvet covers (are they the same size). no - they are the same size - although choice (like everything else) is limited
What would your shopping list be?
too hard...... mostly little things....
To be honest - you can get most stuff here that you get in the UK (with the possible exception of Paxo and Gravy Granules but that is a WHOLE other discussion thread somewhere)
It's just the lack of choice that you have to get used to.
:yes

If you are bringing you own beds, then the bedding will be a good idea, but if not the standard here seems to be queen not double, so unless you already use that size, then wait till you get here, you can get cheap sets in Warehouse, and Briscoes seem to have a permanent sale on..

Looks like my Christmas presents are sorted then, Bras from M&S.
Andy said last night he doesn't want to bother about getting new suits, so can't do much about it. Plenty of other stuff to worry about.
Will cope with lack of choice.
Thanks

Jubjub,
can you confirm for me if Kingsize bedding in the Uk and standard single in the UK are the same and easily available there? Are they about the same price as in the UK. Just wandering if we should get my daughter into a bed and get all the bits here or wait and do it there.
Thanks Debbie

Being a part time technophile I wonder about the availability of electrical and computer accessories. Is there a decent selection of things out there or would I need to import everything? First on my list would definately be a new Sony Vaio laptop to replace the paving slab that my current employer will want back.

Yeh ditch the slab, I had a quick search http://www.cstuff.co.nz/category.pasp?emGUID=6C5B734107064E4F9F8FC191CA1BB F42!2241!3307&categoryid=122and have seen a Sony shop in Willis st, Wellington.
There is a also a reseller of all the corporate 2nd hand stuff near the Westpac stadium by the docks. Can't remember the name at the mo, but if you are a tekkie and after a bargain, it looked pretty good.
I think you can get what you want here. I'm unsure about price comparisons though.

Having got here now, apart from waiting to buy things when I have a job. i feel that I can get everything I need, some things a bit different, learning new names for things ie tomatoe puree is tomatoe paste, that sort of thing.
would like unsmoked bacon, but then new country, new life, new diet. The veggie patch in our rental has me eating beans, beetroot, etc, till its coming out of my ears. great though.
Don;t worry about stocking up, but bring some stuff you like. brought my dyson, had no poblems, bikes, xmas decs, box of food that was in the cupboard, and unopend bottles of booze. No problems (helepd that shippers labeled them Glass jars), but I had told customes I was bringing a few bottles over.

and unopend bottles of booze. No problems (helepd that shippers labeled them Glass jars), but I had told customes I was bringing a few bottles over. You are allowed to bring over the contents of the booze cupboard - I don't know if there are any limits besides the concept of it being 'reasonable'.
We bought lots over (I had been doing a lot of overseas travel and had a bottle of about a dozen different malts from various duty free shops that I hadn't gotten round to drinking, amongst other things) - had to have a list of it all for customs, but I don't know if the ever even looked at it.
We also bought over a couple of cases of wine (we'd holidayed in Bordeaux region for several years before coming over and used to bring a lot of very decent claret back each time - second growths of the top Medoc chateaux normally). When we decided to go for it we started drinking up, but we didn't manage to get through it all, and some wasn't really ready to drink so we bought it over. I don't think that any of it travelled particularly well - some bottled I'd cellared (well) for years were very disappointing when I finally opened them.

If you like Lakeland - go shopping first! While its possible to get all those items you never knew you needed for the kitchen here - its just not the same (and often a tad more expensive).

Don't put too much effort into stocking up just in case. All the stuff we spent money on and stocked up on went "missing" from our shipment possibly before it even set sail.
That's worse than never having it to start with.
Got the claim finally in, still waiting to hear anything back, been here 5 months!
If there's something super special don't put it into boxes that you think won't go missing, even some of the kitchen stuff and toys didn't arrive!
