Hi
Are schools in NZ free for a child starting from 5-6 years old? If not, how much they cost?
Thanks.

Hello to all,
Just wanna ask, If hubby and me are on 2yr work visa/permit will NZ allow our kids to enroll in its state school?
I understand that we have to pre-enroll the kids in school and present the evidence of enrollment before they allow kids to go under student visa. The problem is that we cannot afford to send 3 kids in a private school.
Any information on this matter please.

No problems with a work visa. You are entitled to public education so don't worry.
We phoned a prospective school prior to leaving the Uk and had no problems organising enrolment.
Perhaps we should have looked first though as we chose a very exclusive district of Ch Ch and have found house prices continuing to rise...

Thank you very much Robert, one line in my forehead is now erased.
By the way, I understand that there is petty amount of contribution, or can I say, voluntary contribution for the public school. If you don't mind, may I ask, how much did you contribute?
Pardon me for asking this, coz I'm living in a third world country and every $ really counts. Imagine we have an exhange rate of 1Php=NZ$37

This link takes you to a article about the voluntary contributions, which aren't necessarily so 'petty' - especially to the schools. Children and also expected to buy their own notepads, and stationary, and text books.

We pay around $150 per year and you can add that on twice more for stationary/school trips/uniform etc throughout the year.
All schools set their own donation levels.

having worked in a secondary school I really approve of kids buying their own text books. Strange but they don't chuck them across the classroom when they know they or their parents may have to replace them.....
When we lived in Australia very often schools organised 2nd hand text book sales so that the next year coming up could buy the relevant books.
