Can someone please tell me what an earth is meant by "assistant teacher" in adverts in the ED Gazette? A lot of their teaching posts come with this attached.

I'm Head of ICT in my school in the UK and I know that I am going to have to take a big step backwards when I come to NZ, but I don't want to go back to the beginning. :confused:

20+ yrs ago in the UK my OH was described as an 'Assistant Teacher' in (at least) her first post, despite degree, PGCE, Full Time, Permenent etc.Perhaps there's some subtlety recognised by educational administrators throughout the world which is lost on mere mortals like us?
