Hi y'all

Thought I would post our experiences to date as there are a few newbies on the forum who might like to read about our story.

Dave is a structural engineer and he e-mailed his CV to companies before we spent a week in NZ, when he had interviews. Offered 3 jobs and accepted the one in Palmerston North. He flew back a month later to start the job and the company helped him to apply for a 2 year work permit, which he got 2 days after arriving. He left little wifey (me) behind to sell the house etc. etc. while still working full time. Oh my God.

House sold within 3 weeks of putting it on the market but didn't complete for nearly 2 months, I arranged shipment (just a small one - no furniture), and sent the cat :wah

We didn't think we could apply for PR as Dave is over 55 and thought we would have to go the LTBV route. Then when the points dropped so low I started thinking about my own banking qualification and got a prelim assessment with NZQA. Came back a level 5 so I immediately submitted an EOI with me as primary applicant as we now had 105 points. Selected on 29th September :clap :clap

Meantime, Dave was looking for a different place to rent so he could house the cat when he arrived. But.......... he found a house that he fell in love with in Feilding and wanted to buy. Aaarrrgghh. What do I say?? He gave me the option of saying 'No - wait until I get there' but he obviously saw the potential and I trust his judgement so he went ahead with my blessing. The NZ bank bridged us for about 3 weeks until we received the proceeds of the UK house.

I arrived 2 weeks ago and I'm settling in fine. It was a bit difficult at first until I got transport but now I'm tootling around Feilding visiting the chiropractor, doing the shopping and generally wandering around the town. It feels a bit odd not going out to work and having time to myself, but there's a lot to do to keep me occupied. Bought my car from a lady who works in a bank here and there is a huge demand for staff who are on call to fill in for staff on courses, holiday, ill etc. So may be able to get a job quite easily, although I haven't actually worked in banking for 11 years, but did have 21 years experience prior to that.

Dave moved into the house on 27th August so he was well on the way with getting work done on it. There's only the two of us and the house is huge. It's on old 1910 villa in Feilding with an absolutely massive garden. We could build another house in the garden and people who come to do jobs are amazed that it hasn't been sub-sectioned. It's one of the few sections that hasn't been sub-sectioned. So it is possible to find houses with loads of garden.

He's had the house repainted and it looks beautiful from the outside and he's nearly killed himself getting the garden to rights - it was more like a forest when he first started, but he's felled a lot of trees (we've got loads of firewood for the woodburner :laugh ) and has started constructing a fish pond and stream. :eek There's a lot of renovation needed inside. Ancient cork tiles stuck over a beautiful wood floor :eek , which took Dave 3 days to remove. He's got plans for extending the kitchen (which is also tongue and groove), which isn't such a big job the way NZ houses are constructed. We've furnished the bedroom for about $500, second-hand dressing table, new fulllength mirror and bedside cabinets, and he got loads of stuff from a work mate coming to the UK for $2,000 - living room furniture, bed, kitchen equipment (loads), TV, hi-fi. Didn't he do well :clap :clap

The weather's a bit up and down right now - I think we had 4 seasons in one yesterday. I'm less cold than I was - woodburner going most of the time, warmer clothing. I've got somebody coming tomorrow to talk about heat pumps, so will let you know how that goes. Bit short of funds now after all the money Dave has already spent on the house. Maybe a project for next Autumn.

I do like it here. It is soooo quiet. Haven't met the neighbours yet. They are both out all day so will intoduce myself at the weekend. Everybody friendly, helpful and willing to chat. It's only a small place but there are three supermarkets. Woolworth's, New World and Write Price. There is the wonderful Warehouse and lots of nice little shops. A second-hand book shop Moorf.

And Diny will be my near neighbour in Ashhurst when she gets here. So there will be somebody with shared experiences to chat to.

Well I think this has gone on for long enough and I've probably bored the pants off you all and I have to get to immigration TODAY.

Bye for now - Sandra

Hi Sandra,

I've just posted a request asking for similar information (read your note after I'd posted  ) - sounds like everything is going really well for you. Thanks for making the post its very interesting info.

Take care,

Back from immigration now and I have a lovely shiny new work permit in my passport which is set to expire at the same time as Dave's. :clap :clap But mine says that I can work anywhere for anybody. Nah, nah, nah, nah, nah. Dave has to work for his company and nobody else.

The guy at NZIS was absolutely brilliant. I was a little nervous (especially after my entry at immigration- see other posts). (Moorf - they really c****ed up my entry details on the computer when I came in. I was entered as SQ281, Sandra Ann. He'd put my flight number as my surname.) But, would you believe, I was already on the computer anyway from the last 2 times I've been to NZ, under my old passport number :eek . I said to the guy 'I am not a number...... and he finished it off ......... ' I am a free man.' Fans of The Prisoner will recognise this quote. :laugh This made the whole thing a lot more friendly. The immigration guy said they keep the records for a very long time. It took 35 minutes and Dave had to write a letter saying that he supported my application. I had the choice of a visit visa or a work permit and seeing as my husband thinks I should get out and keep him in the manner to which we have become accustomed, I chose the work permit.

He just needed 1 passport photo, $90, Dave's letter of support, and the application form applying as a family member. He didn't even want to look at my proof that we were in a long-standing relationship. Apparently we were in the wrong age category for people trying to kid them and it was obvious from our inter reaction that we were a long-standing couple, no we weren't rowing. :laugh

I am so happy that it's over :yes Unfortunately, if we are invited to apply for residency they don't handle it, but can only forward on the docs. Shame they are happy to relax the rules a bit ;) .

Those of you asking for piccies of the house will have to wait a bit. I just deleted them off the lap-top I was using after our computer was shipped :no Although I did send them to Moorf and Rae, but I doubt whether they will still have them and the house is a different colour now. The digi camera software and attachments are on the old computer which is coming in the shipment which doesn't arrive until 22nd.

:yes :P :yes :P I've got a visa. Yay :raebanana :raebanana :raebanana

Bye for now - Sandra

Hi, Sandra,

Thanks so much for keeping us up to date!! The favorite part of my day is coming online with a big mug of hot coffee to see what everyone's been up to, and I always love reading your posts.

I'd be delighted to post your pictures, but unfortunately, they fell victim to the failure of the hard drive on my laptop and have been lost forever. :wah

I'm just recovering from that catastrophe, so maybe Moorf can come to the rescue!!

Congratulations on your shiny new work visa -- go, girl!!! :raebanana

All the best, Rae

I still have your pics here Sandra - you want me to email them to you?

I think I know the answer to this question.. but were you able to get the work visa because Dave is already employed?

Hey, I reckon that cock up with your name might have been the reason they got you back a second time at the airport... not a "problem with your passport" at all.. just a problem with the immigration guys brain!

Well, soooooo glad you are finally visa'd up.. a huge load of your mind I expect.

More pics of the house please.. what colour is it now?!!

Moorf - I've PM'd my new e-mail address.

Yes - I got the visa 'cos Dave had a job already. I applied as a family member.

The house is now 3 different shades of grey with the windowframes and sills and doors white. Very light grey on the main walls and darker grey on the trimmings and an even darker grey on the roof. It really is lovely. Maybe I should wait until I can take new piccies, but you can always see the before and after - just like 'Changing Rooms' :laugh

Hi Sandra,

Great to hear all is going well :nice1 Reading through the months of postings, you guys really deserve a slightly calmer time.
Did you receive my PM reply? Sorry I missed you when you were staying in Winsford.
Meeting up with other 'local forum members' coming Saturday in Stretton (Warrington), can't wait :clap
Anyway, look forward to hearing from you and reading about your experience now you've made it there.

Hi Sandra,

Have just read both posts, and must say it seems you have settled in really well. :nice1 Am glad to say there aren't any negative vibes coming across only positive ones which is good as it seems people on this forum take more notice of positive posts :yes rather than negative ones. :no

May as well just let you know while i'm here that i am going to NZ House in a few weeks to get that visa. :hopeso Have been told that the evidence i have for job offer is only valid for 3 months, so i need to get my a**e into gear as i have had it 8 weeks already, was hoping house would sell sooner :no I know i still have house to sell, but at least i will have it and i must bite the bullet and accept i will probably lose time on the visa, but its chance i have to take. Received e-mail from employer last night reiterating his stance along with mine, offer will remain open, :nice1 :yes :clap and states that there is a shiny brand new Scania rig just waiting for me to drive on those open NZ roads. :cool

Keep us posted with your experience's and keep em positive. No negatives ones please.

Nice work Sandra.

Hope all goes well.

Dont know where everyone gets these job offers from. Everyone I've spoken to has said they cant help unless Im there. Might just be my industry though - graphic design.

On a better note, I'm off to do exactly that next Friday. Show my face and my portfolio. And my EOI was selected on 15 Sept, I had 110 pts without a job offer.

Well done once again

Michelle - no way will we sub-divide, sorry, so much space :yes Dave did have a job offer in Auckland at $3,000 a year more, but we just didn't want to live there. I know the climate is probably a bit better up there, but it's so nice living in a very rural area and virtually no traffic on the roads in comparison to the UK. It's actually a pleasure doing the 20 minute drive into Palmy from Feilding.

Kim - When on earth are you going to get that house sold? With a job waiting for you as well. What a shame - bet you can't wait to get your hands on that shiny new rig. There's room to park outside the house if you are ever down Feilding way. :laugh

Hi Babette - bet you're looking forward to the get together. Wish we had thought about it while I was still in Warrington, would have been good to meet up with everybody. I imagine it will be a lot of fun.

I'm working on the pictures that Moorf e-mailed me - watch this space.

HI funkstar,

Let us know how your "job-hunting" holiday goes.

Did you managed to fix up some interviews before hand or are you planning on knocking on doors when you are there?

I am interested to know how you did and what obstacles (if any) you faced cos I am in a similar situation. No takers to all the enquiries I made unless I am in NZ.

Hi Veronica - Can't believe it worked :clap .

The house was built in 1910 and the I think the dining area bit and kitchen were added in the '70's. That's why there was horrible cork tiling all over the floor in the hall, dining area and kitchen. The tiling is gone in the hall now after Dave spilt blood, sweat and tears to remove tiles plus evostick. There is no nice wood flooring under the dining area so it will have to be covered with something else eventually.

House looks fab - your Dave has good taste :clap

How are you finding the Rav? We love ours :P

Dave & Sandra
8th October 2004, 11:09 AM
I love my RAV - it's so easy to drive and I do like being high up in a 4WD.

On another topic my poor cat was going demented about being stuck in the house and I wasn't sure if a man from the MAF would turn up to check he was still under lock and key. So I called MAF to check if, when the 30 days are up, an inspector would call to make sure he was fit to be let loose on NZ :laugh

She said I can let him out now, that they just need to keep a check on where he is, and I would have had the poor thing cooped up for another 12 days. :clap :clap He's gone mad running around the garden and now has completely vanished. He did come back though when he escaped twice before, so I'm not really worried.

Another strange thing today as well. We got a letter from the Register of Electors addressed to 'the occupant' saying that as new occupants we hadn't registered to vote. I called them to explain that we were only here on work permits at the moment but were applying for residency. Apparently if you are here as a PR you are allowed to vote. I thought it was only citizens who are allowed to vote, but not the case in NZ.

Just managed to log into Yahoo and look at your pics. The house looks really good now, you've done alot of work.

My mother in law phoned me tonight, we got talking about those air pump heater thingies. She said that they were thinking about getting one. She says it's still very cool in the Manawatu - electric blankets at night and the fire on in the lounge.

I told her that you'd just had one fitted and she was amazed at how resonable they are to run (I told her the monthly cost that you quoted).

Will definately look into one of them I think.

I must say I'm feeling fairly proud of him :yes

Diny - No don't know a Jeff Hallam. Don't know any Hallams. He's doing Ok up to now, but will have to get somebody to do the roof.

Timbo - I was convinced you were a joiner. Wonder where I got that from. You'll just have to admire the decorating when we get that far. Yes there is insulation in that wall. That's a bathroom and is another bit of extension that was added in the 70's so they must have insulated that bit when it was built. It's mandatory now to insulate any new building work.

Sweetpea - Thanks for the comments on the house. You can come for the grand tour when you arrive in Palmy. :cheers

Don't know what happened with the middle picture - I resized them all but that one is bigger for some reason.

Had our medicals this week and hoping to submit ITA next week, with pre-assessment of qual. only and out-of-date Police certs.

NZ medicals cost $100 each per medical, $85 each per X-ray and $10 each per blood test. I could have cried when a guy at work told me he had his done by the company doctor and he charged $40 for the medical. Why didn't he tell me sooner. :?

Well this is it at long last. Have now got everything together for ITA, pending NZQA full assessment of my qual. and applying for new Police Certs. So hoping to take time out of work tomorrow and take it all along to NZIS in Palmy. We got the invite at end of Feb. and still haven't got round to it. Life sort of gets in the way.

Things have been a little tense at the moment with Dave fracturing his heel in the middle of kitchen extension work and living with no kitchen for over a month :wah But I must say that I am loving living here. The drive to work in the morning is brilliant. There is a range of hills behind Palmy and one morning there was just a long white cloud above the hills. I was tootling along thinking - this is it - the Land of the Long White Cloud. This must be what the Maoris saw when they first arrived. It was so beautiful and I felt really happy. Can't say that driving into Warrington town centre every morning compares to driving into Palmy - they are literally worlds apart.

Worries-
1. Dave's blood pressure was too high on the day and doc ticked bit that says might need further medical attention in the future. Oh oh.
2. I'm not in skilled employment 'cos basically I don't want to work in a bank anymore, which isn't skilled employment to them anyway - I'm happy doing admin/accounts and my bosses like me too. I've got a job - isn't that enough  Dave's job is Long Term Skills shortage anyway so (fingers crossed) they will let us in. Please. I really like living here. Everybody is so nice and the work ethic is a lot more laid back here.

Please everybody cross your fingers now and have a joint wish "Sandra and Dave will get PR, Sandra & Dave will get PR etc.........................."

Got fingers crossed BIG TIME for you. Really sounds like you're loving your life over there.

Hope Dave is well on the road to recovery now. As for the blood pressure bit. Mine was hight when I went and had my NZIS medical - first time I've ever suffered from high BP. Blooming typical eh

I'm sure you'll be fine - hell - they let anybody in these days :laugh

Looks like the trip to Barista is getting closer :nice1

Good luck.

And here I thought you were pining for good old Warrington and sunny Winsford  No seriously, Palmy must seem like a different planet. Good to read you're so happy with your decision to move there.

Best of luck tomorrow (today already?) thinking lots of positive thoughts for you & Dave. Hope his heel heels soon and you get a fully functional kitchen back ;)

Hi Dave and Sandra,

Hope you get your PR and at the same time Dave to recover soon.

As for myself, after my interview with NZIS, the NZIS consultant physician require me to do two very specific test to assess my diabetic condition. Luckily for me, the results turn out fine and I am now waiting for the final decision by NZIS.

My advice is that after submitting your ITA, do all things possible to get dave blood pressure down (take medication, reduce stress, etc) as NZIS may require additional tests to evaluate Dave's medical condition.

Regards.

Vincent
