Hi again, ,more questions. I promise I will answer some after I arrive.
i noticed a thread on when best to apply for IRD no.
But how do you get one and from where?
Do you have to have job/work permit first?
Thank you, thank you, thank you, to all those who have ventured on to the site tonight to find endless questions from me....
Also, anyone know if you can get pay as you go internet connection in NZ - do you load it on your PC with the sort of disks bought from supermarkets (a bit like you do in UK). Would i have to buy this in NZ or could i take my tesco net with me (well, it is a WORLD wide web!!!)
Questions, questions.... and more questions after this i'm sure
thanks! Hannah

Heres the instructions,
http://www.ird.govt.nz/how-to/irdnumbers/
You need the form from here
http://www.ird.govt.nz/forms-guides/number/forms-500-599/ir595-form-individualirdapp.html?id=righttabs
I think ours took about 4 weeks to get back to the UK.

We got 200 free hours from Xtra on a free disc we picked up at the Telecom mobile shop in Welly. This was for dial up before we got BB. We also brought an AOl disc from home and managed a little while on that but it didn't like us very much, so wouldn't recommend it.
We also picked up various wifi spots but that is too technical for me to understand and they threw us off after we had been on for so long without paying. :laugh but you can subscribe to ones like cafenet.
Hope this helps a bit.

Sorry if I'm stating the obvious but if it helps anyone...
I dropped my IRD paperwork off in person at the Wellington office and it took only a week (from one Wednesday to the next) to get the number sent to me locally. Also, the bank (ASB) said just to let them know when I got one, didn't keep me from starting an account. And, the very nice IRD lady said it should not keep me from getting a job if I didn't have one yet. Since it didn't hurt to get one, I went ahead and took care of it.

In case anyone else is wondering. I have just received my IRD number, posted to my UK address. I have no visa/no work permit/no NZ address/no job offer.
It took about three weeks to arrive after sending a downloaded application form.

Are you allowed to work while waiting for your number to come through?

I think the answer is yes, you can. BUT, if you dont have an IRD no. you will have to pay a higher tax rate on any interest earned. If you are tranferring proceeds from a house sale over to NZ, this could make quite an impact.

Thanks Tim, just downloaded the form, looking at it we won't need any numbers for the children because we can't claim anything, not having residency for years yet.

OK forgive me but I think this is a subject that has completely passed me by. :uhoh
When is the best time to get one, can I get one before I move, before PR is granted etc.
