We went up Mount Tarawera in April this year and it was fab. You can choose if you want to go in the morning or afternoon, we went in the morning. It is a fab morning/afternoon out. You get a very good guide who drives you most of the way up the mountain then you walk to the top and take a scree slide down into the crater, then you climb back up the other side. Well worth the views

This is me doing the scree slide, pretty scary at first but when you get use to it, it is great!!!!
